Russian medievalist, linguist, and concentration camp survivor. During his lifetime, Likhachov was considered the world's foremost scholar of the Old East Slavic language and its literature.
The beginning of the book was rather dull and had lack in informative, compelling plot. Taking into consideration that the author lived in Soviet Union I would describe this drawback as irrelevant since the continuance seemed to be more thought-provoking and educational. Likhachev gives us the image of an average intellectual, whose outlooks never split up misunderstandings and contradictions to the existing moral values. I was amused by the simple but at the same time thoroughly chosen words for coming across the ideas to the public. I would strongly recommend this book to people who want to keep up with the traditions of morality, civility and erudition.
