Traffic safety matters. One of the first chances we get to teach this subject is as young ones start riding the bus. In School Bus Safety, Deputy Becky Coyle uses adorable rhymes and illustrations to teach young students, in a fun and engaging way, the importance of knowing and following the rules. This addition to the series includes the important steps to approaching, riding, and exiting the bus in a safe and friendly manner. The School Safety series’ goal is to explain school safety to young children in a fun and engaging way. Created by a deputy sheriff and school resource officer, these books are informative and engaging with the goal to help children understand the importance of safety in their schools.
While the first day of school is often cause for anxiety in some youngsters, others are excited about having a new experience. In Nina's case, even though she's running late because her mother didn't wake her up on time, she's so excited that she rushes out of the house to catch the bus. Afraid that she will miss it, she doesn't look both ways before crossing the street and is almost hit by a car. Her friends and a kind-hearted and concerned bus driver lay out some safety precautions for her to keep in mind while riding the bus. The story is told in rhyming lines that give off good energy while supported by illustrations featuring close-up views of children's faces. This is a catchy way to share school bus safety tips. Maybe Nina won't be running late the next time, and she will certainly be more careful while trying to catch the bus.
A very simple treatment of school bus safety tips written by a deputy/school resource officer.
Nina dashes outside to catch her school bus. Ostensibly, it is her first time on the bus as she learns the different rules and procedures for riding safely on a school bus. Told using a sing-song rhyming text, Coyle has set this up in a story format and includes the rules within the text. A separate page listing all of the rules in one place would be helpful for review after finishing the book.
Cartoonish illustrations by Juanbjan Oliver and Elmira Eskandari are large, bright, and colorful and could be used in front of a small group of children.
This is most appropriate to read at preschool before they start riding a school bus.
This book was very helpful in teaching children how to be safe when crossing the street as well as riding a bus. Nina was a great example of how children react when they are faced with danger. The bus driver and the other children riding the bus with Nina did an excellent job of teaching her the proper ways to be safe. I really liked how neatly the book rhymed, it made it easy and fun to read.
