Foundations of Interprofessional Collaborative Practice in Healthcare is a timely text on understanding and developing interprofessional collaborative practice among healthcare providers, which helps to advance a growing need in today's healthcare culture. Slusser et al. (2018) provide real-world examples through case studies for understanding the importance of interprofessional collaboration among healthcare professionals and networks in the rapidly changing healthcare system. The book is a five-star text for use as an introduction to interprofessional collaboration in healthcare.
The major themes discussed in the text are centered around the four competencies for interprofessional collaboration and practice: values and ethics, roles and responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teams and teamwork. Each theme has a focused introduction and expansion of content to the application context and is followed by case studies for building practice. Additionally, sub-competencies for each of the four competencies are discussed to expand the reader's knowledge and allow for differentiated learning within the text context. The text serves entry-level healthcare practitioners and experienced professionals in building a toolbox of tips and tricks for successfully building their and others' interprofessional collaboration practices.
The authors successfully share basic knowledge and real-world examples and build the reader's practice in exercising the concepts through case studies for each competency. The flow of information is well organized, with exceptional use of tables and figures to solidify and expand information retention. The text is well-organized into six sections and is easily understood. The authors provide evidence for all necessary content to gain the reader's trust and present materials in an authentic clinical context. Sentence structure is simple yet complete, which aids the ease of reading. The use of practical vocabulary is well done with minimal medical jargon that, when used, is supported with a definition—minimizing jargon aids early career clinicians with limited medical experience in understanding concepts and synthesizing information. Despite the relative ease of reading and comprehending the material for entry-level healthcare professionals, the text is also significant for seasoned clinicians looking to expand their interprofessional collaborative practice with meaningful cases that aid the application of concepts for practice. Overall, this text delivers a base for understanding and developing interprofessional collaborative methods in healthcare.

This book covers a lot of critical areas in healthcare practice like values and ethics, competencies, communication and teamwork. These areas for collaboration are described in relevant case studies for each topic. The parts of the book cover the benefits of collaboration, values and ethics, roles and responsibilities, communication and teams/teamwork which are very timely and helpful topics for those working in healthcare today.
The only critique is that some of the citations are quite dated and references to some national organizations have outdated terms or information.
The book flows nicely, each chapter builds on the last and complements the next chapter topic. There are several examples and case studies that are very specific to healthcare professionals, therefore, people from other areas might find it heavy and difficult to understand.
Anyone working in healthcare, including behavioral healthcare like one of the book reviewers, will benefit from this book as it gives great overview of the critical topics, examples and most helpfully competencies to be integrated into our practice.

Foundations of Interprofessional Collaborative Practice in Health Care
By Margaret Slusser, Luis I Garcia, Carole-Rae Reed, Patricia Quinn McGinnis

Slusser, M., Garcia, L. I., Reed, C. R., & McGinnis, P. Q. (2018). Foundations of Interprofessional collaborative practice in health care. Elsevier Health Sciences.

This book was very beneficial in reviewing the process of collaboration. I have learned an enormous amount of information from the book. I particularly enjoyed chapter 7 thru 9. Which focus attention on the foundation of professional roles and responsibilities and how those roles are socialized through different stigma.

Slusser, Garcia, Reed and McGinnis; Foundations of Interprofessional Collaborative Practice in Health Care is an excellent read for introduction for collaborative practice. This team introduced some unique core competencies to help identify roles and responsibilities. The book reviewed different ways to communicate effectively in a team oriented environment.
The case studies that were provided were helpful in terms of putting a plan into action in order to improve the patient care experiences and given much needed attention to the different culture within the healthcare environment that is sometimes overlooked.

To bridge the gaps within the healthcare field by educating all new on-comers who plan to work within the healthcare field and give them an up close and personal outlook on some of the things that will be required and needed in order to follow through when caring for patients and the consumer.

The structure of the book flows in terms of education, purpose and need. The book begins with the complex issues of the current healthcare environment and what those in positions of leadership need to do in order to change outcomes that may hinder performance improvements. The book continues with the purpose of describing the potential impact of transforming healthcare by looking at the overall design and quality of services instead of quantity. The book suggests that there is a need to focus on the infrastructure and the resources that can be allocated to bring new ideas, insight and solutions which ultimately will be driven by health informatics models and evidence-based-practice.

The book is an easy read. These authors used descriptive words and the language is simple and free of overused big words. I recommended this book. It provided the necessary knowledge for understanding the purpose for collaboration. The book was interesting, informative and entertaining.
