War and Memory in Malaysia and Singapore consists of several essays on the social and collective memories of the Japanese Occupation in the region. The detailed sections on education, forced labour, torture methods and the monuments in Johor makes them affecting. And I enjoyed the argument on how post-war memory can be selective and propagandaic. There is perhaps more that can be pursued on the social effects, but overall it covers a good deal on those terrible times.
