This course enables students from intermediate level upwards to develop the skills needed for English-medium study at post-secondary level. Dry, monotonous, abstract and bloodless. As unpleasant as this book must be for students, I pity the people who have to teach this material even more.

Well, the hell with it. Nothing in this book seems to date after 1989. Coincidentally, the oldest student in my class was born in 1989. So whenever the curriculum tells me to use something from this book, I just claim I lost the damn thing and make up something with a topic the students can relate to. As opposed to "McLuhanism", the increasing importance of "Personal desktop computer word-processors", the ethics of euthanasia, or how to use the card catalog in the library.
