About the author

Lionel Thomas Caswall Rolt (usually abbreviated to Tom Rolt or L.T.C. Rolt) was a prolific English writer and the biographer of major civil engineering figures including Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Thomas Telford. He is also regarded as one of the pioneers of the leisure cruising industry on Britain's inland waterways, and as an enthusiast for both vintage cars and heritage railways.

I havent read a book by Tom Rolt that has ever disappointed. Not just because I am interested in the topics he tackles, more that hh has a writing style that sounds both of its time and modern. There is really good flow to the chapters and crisp prose.

For a cruise through the history of our waterways this is a cracking read and will leave you with amuch clearer picture on why are waterways are where they are and look like they do
