Julia Reynolds is a twenty-first century Nancy Drew, a little more suspicious, a lot more daring and maybe just a little more fragile, too. Often uprooted by her parents, Julia is always the girl that never quite fits in, but she is smart, headstrong and needs answers to questions many of us wouldn’t think to ask.

Julia has just moved back to New Orleans and she is determined to find out what happened to her missing cousin. When she learns of the Ursuline Convent, one of New Orleans’ landmark buildings, she finds there is a story behind the locked door of the convent’s third floor. No matter what, Julia is determined to find out if the story is true about the occupants locked away. Her hope? To solve this mystery and create interest in the mystery of what happened to her cousin.

What Julia wasn’t prepared for was to fall for the school hottest guy or his returned interest. Will they become the dynamic duo that unlocks the secrets of the convent? Is there a connection to her cousin’s disappearance? What if Julia uncovers more than she should have?

SHADOW LILIES by Lee Ann Ward is a wonderful young adult mystery with a feisty heroine who seems to get herself into trouble of her own making, yet never gives up, even after several warnings. There is more to Julia than meets the eye. She is a force to be reckoned with who leaps before she looks closely enough, but her tenacity makes for an excellent YA read. Scenes come to life as Lee Ann Ward takes us through a labyrinth of lies, deceit and danger, all while never giving up the answers too soon!

The difference between us normal people and writers is that they see what we never see and imagine what we never could. Shadow Lilies takes you on a journey through New Orleans that you will never forget. Follow sixteen year old Julia Reynolds as she tries to discover the mystery of the Ursuline Convent. This book is easily the best book I have read this year.

It's been several months since I read YA, and even longer for a YA mystery. Julia is an unlikely contemporary YA heroine--a gritty, modern Nancy Drew.
Unique characters/family life, interesting setting, suspenseful read.

Loved how Mrs. Ward wove the legends of the Ursuline Convent in New Orleans with her modern-day story. The MC, Julia, is interesting to follow to see how far she'll go to figure out what happened to her beloved missing cousin. Ending had a twist I didn't see coming so that's always fun

*I received a copy of this, but all views are my own.*

This book had me hooked from the beginning. I love mysteries, and I enjoy well-written YA novels. This book was both, and I cannot wait to read the next one.

Julia is a fantastic main character. I love her stubbornness, and I feel for her self-consciousness. Both get her into trouble at times, but she is a very brave character, and I found her relatable. I love that she wants to be a journalist and she is passionate about solving mysteries and she is really fantastic at it.

The rest of the characters are great. Ryan is an interesting character that had me changing my mind about him every other chapter. I loved Tyler. He put up with Julia’s stubbornness and stood by her all the way. He was a great friend and a fun character to read.

I love Lee Ann Ward’s writing. Her ability to create realistic dialogue, relatable characters and edge of your seat mystery is incredible. I’ll be looking into more from her for sure.

If you enjoy YA and mystery, I highly suggest this one. The reveal shocked me and I never saw it coming.

This book is soooo good.
Super fun read that I couldn’t put down and am still thinking about. Ward did an amazing job of developing a main character who is a teenager, wise beyond her years, yet still a stubborn kid who has much to learn, and self aware to boot.

A realistic family dynamic made it super easy to relate to and a couple of mysteries with just the right hints dropped throughout that put a fun spin on history in the process made this even more relatable and addictive.

The book is clean editing/proofing wise and professional. Nothing to distract from the reader experience. It’s exciting, fast-paced, heart-wrenching at times… really amazing read. I cannot find any faults or any reason to not give it 5 stars.
