Wayward Wulves Beware
Wayward Wulves Beware , first in Eye of the Wulf Series , weaves Celtic myth and mountain lore into a tartan of greed and treachery, courage and sacrifice. Wulves and Faer Ones, their faerie allies, defend Eden-like Lisnafaer against the corruption wrought by human necromancers. From on high, Sky-Wulf warns the birth of Anell and Akir's eagerly awaited cubs portends imminent danger. Indeed, sons Kalar and Sonsie's arrival throws their pack--and Lisnafaer--into turmoil. Kalar strives to become a hunter, a boar killer like Akir. But Sonsie, aspiring to be a great singer wulf, pursues the Faer Ones' song. Thwarted efforts to guard the rebellious cubs cause Anell and Akir to clash. Though Akir forbids contact with all Faer Ones, he can't prevent their shadowing his sons. Encounters with chancy supernatural beings intensify Kalar and Sonsie's dangerous secret life. When the shape-shifting Lady and Lord of Lisnafaer lure the half-yearling brothers into the Cavern Perilous, their worst fears are confirmed. The wulves' destiny is mortal combat with two banished beasts held captive in the Otherworld. But are the cubs the cure - or the cause? And what connects the dire beasts to blade- wielding human cutters? One answer lies in gloom-haunted Scanlon Hollow. Two cutter brothers, lusting for the Faer Ones' golden apples, perform grisly rites to conjure the demon cat Scrag Tail. If they succeed, Terror Wulf follows. Cutters seek to exile the Faer Ones, take their forests, exterminate the wulves, and seize the deer for sport--the end of the Balance Green. Kalar and Sonsie must choose. Abandon their pack. Accept their destiny--and possible death. Or renounce their heroic calling. Assume their lot as marked wulves--certain death if the cutters get their way. Kalar and Sonsie's adventures continue in the second Eye of the Wulf Series.

This was a fantastic read. It was definitely different than the typical fae/fairy type books I've recently read. And reading from the point of views of actual forest animals rather than human/fae beings was a new and refreshing experience for me. I found the Celtic myth and mountain lore to be respectfully close. You can tell the research on Lord Green and Lady Light was done wonderfully. Expect your mind and heart to be swept away with this novel. This world is beautifully visionary. This book captures the beauty of wildlife. If you love wildlife, great fantasy, and Folklore. I recommend this to you.

This book has gorgeous prose, but the way the Celtic mythology was handled made it difficult for me to read. It was written in such a way that it seemed like I, the reader, was already supposed to know who these mythological characters were, and the old-timey dialect made conversations between the characters hard to follow.
That being said, I'm actually interested in learning more about Celtic mythology now that I've read this book.

Wonderful images...
...formed in my mind as I read this wonderful book! The wolves became so perfectly well formed characters. Characters that seemed as if they could come out of the pages to join me! At the end, I just wanted more and hopefully we will learn where Sonsie's and Kalar's life continues to take them! I highly recommend you join in their adventure as I have.

I became a member of this wolf pack, worrying over the new cubs, listening, watching, and hunting. It's obvious the author has researched wolf ecology and behavior. The wolf dialogue is amazing. Of course they would sound just like this! The author weaves Akir's wolf pack story with the story of Faer Ones. Are they enemies or allies? An engrossing read and much fun.

An impressive first novel by L. N. Passmore draws on two main sources of inspiration: Celtic folklore and the lives of a wolf pack. She’s done her research and it shows. Her wulves are truly wolves, not just humans in wolves’s clothing. This is not, however, a lecture on the lives of wolves. On the contrary, Passmore delivers a cracking good story, lush in description and full of memorable characters. I am excited to see the next offering from Passmore and find out what the future holds for Kalar and Sonsie. Hopefully she will not keep us waiting too long!
