Six Guns and Sorcery In 1868, six people sought refuge at a hidden enclave in the high desert country of eastern A brilliant female doctor dying of a rare disease; A Confederate deserter; Two refugees from a lynch mob; A former slave; A womanizing shootist. These were the first acolytes of Stonegarden Abbey, learning the secrets of Hermetic magic under the tutelage of the mysterious prophet Ezekiel Reardon. But Ezekiel had an agenda of his own, and their time at Stonegarden ended in fire and tragedy. Those left alive thought the tragedy was behind them. But the dark power they believed was gone and buried with Ezekiel only slept, and it is awakening now, ten years later. The survivors of Stonegarden must return to the ruined Abbey when they are called to rescue one of their own, a woman they had thought long dead. With the help of a teenage half-breed Native girl, these broken people must reclaim their old skills and find the strength within themselves to save their fallen sister Anne-Marie from an ancient evil… and the fate of the Earth itself might well hang in the balance.
•audiobook• I was genuinely intrigued by a historical, fantasy western. The book sample from Goodreads had piqued my interest, to the point even though it had minumal reviews, I took a chance. I was very disappointed and after trying to listen to it three separate times (I really really wanted to like a story where silver haired/eyed characters learned the ‘language’ to communicate with animals!), I felt compelled to return it. The narrator was okay. His voice and accent brought such realism to the geographical and time line story line. I would completely look up this narrator. If he has produces more! The story well well written, grammatically, but it was kind of clunky and boring in delivery. The tone and vocabulary felt more modern day and abbreviated than compatible with the era of the alleged tale.
In the interests of full disclosure, I should mention that I'm acquainted with the author and I was one of the beta-readers for this book. That said, do yourself a favor and read this book. It's thoroughly enjoyable as a Weird Western (i.e., a Western with supernatural/horror elements thrown in for good measure), but beyond that, it's just a damn good story. The real strength of Hatcher's writing is that he creates believable, compelling characters, and he also really builds the suspense at a perfect tempo. Once you start reading you won't be able to put this down. Trust me on that latter point: as a beta-reader, one of my biggest frustrations was getting this book in chapter-by-chapter increments every few weeks - I couldn't wait to find out what would happen next, but had to...
At just over a hundred pages you might think it's too short (especially when you get to the end) But the story has plenty to take in and pulls you in, so enjoy the ride.. Is it a western or science fiction? As the Guardian of Forever from Star Trek would say, it is both, and neither. You say you don't care for genre fiction? Do you like a well written story with interesting characters? Then this is worth a look.
Great original story with deep well-built characters. I love Greg's story telling style, and detailed descriptions. I look forward to more of the story
The Silver Riders is a weird western. If you aren't sure what that is, it's basically a western with elements of one or more other genres, usually science fiction, fantasy or horror. Genre mashups are a great pulp tradition that continues to be hugely influential today and Greg Hatcher has done a fine job of carrying on that tradition.
More importantly, this is a well-written and entertaining story about well-drawn, relatable characters that it's fun getting to know. Even if you don't like westerns or fantasy, even if the idea of spellslingers in the old west battling the forces of supernatural evil somehow doesn't appeal to you, everyone likes good stories. This definitely one of those.
Plus, it's pretty short. That might seem like a weird recommendation, but I appreciate a book that gets to the point and doesn't waste your time.
