Orphan: Surfacing

God is dead. The war between Heaven and Hell had waged for eons, spiraling towards its inevitable conclusion as the Book of Revelations began to unfold. Mankind, most unknowingly or unbelievingly caught in the crossfire, had played small but critical roles throughout its history. But when an unimaginable act resets the balance of power, no outcome remains guaranteed and all of creation teeters on the brink of oblivion. A dark stage has been set. Heaven falls silent. Its once glorious armies plunge into disarray while their hellish counterparts thrive unattested. The demon Uzahl sews corruption as it stalks Traci Nicholas and her son, Solomon, whose mysterious gifts surge in strength. Something stirs. After turning from God, Athiel had spent four decades in the depths of the Pacific reconciling his lost faith with the suffrage he had witnessed. Suddenly he is jolted awake and inexplicably drawn back to the surface and the world of man, no longer sure to which world he belongs. Kings advance their pawns. The enigmatic Manuel Valdez watches events unfold, sending deadly S.W.A.R.M. assault teams to eradicate angelic and demonic targets to further his shadowy agenda. Hope remains. In the city of Lanza del los Santos, the Big Apple of the West, stands the Cathedral of Saint Michael. Within its walls the angelic captain Dycliasses safeguards Joseph, a charismatic young priest scarred by a terrifying vision. If they can survive the enemy at their gates they may yet have a chance to stem the growing darkness.

On an epic stage every bit as mesmerizing as its cover, Orphan: Surfacing chronicles spiritual warfare at its most personal and universal levels. The Death of God reverberates through the lives of characters mortal and divine with chilling consequences as angelic and demonic forces wage an End Times-styled Holy War that is launched by a group of human agitators determined to rid mankind of the influence of supernatural forces.

Author Nathan Day has crafted an odyssey of Christian horror across a dystopian landscape where divinity is more emphatically human than good or evil. I highly recommend this engaging read and foresee even more marvel in the future from Day with the fulfillment of the Orphan Saga.

“For the judged, we bring redemption. For those that judge, we bring execution.”

God can never die, right?
But God is dead and the Throne is vacant.
Angels are losing their powers and demons are becoming stronger.
Something has happened that even Lucifer failed to accomplish and no one knows how.
Solomon, a boy has the gift to see Angels and Demons and he has slowly witnessed the world unraveling but can never say a word.
Athiel had lost his faith decades ago but has suddenly been called from the depths of the oceans to come back to the surface.
Manuel Valdez watches as Angels and Demons are erradicated to fulfill his agenda.
Is this the end? Is the prophecy of the book of Revelations coming true?

Orphan Surfacing by Nathan Day is an action fantasy novel with a hint of dystopian vibes to it.
First of I love the cover of the book, it's beautiful.
I liked the story but I feel that the book is still not done. (Maybe there'll be a sequel so hopefully everything will fall into place.)
This book does have really sad elements in it do get ready with the tissues.
There are way too many characters, and if you know me, I'm not a big fan. But I guess it was necessary in this book so as to get different views during the given situation.
I enjoyed Traci and Solomon's parts of the story because the mother-son duo was enjoyable to read.
I quite liked how the author was able to interconnect everything together which was one of my biggest concerns while reading the book, but it went well.
There are quite a few typos that are a little bit distracting while reading the book.

I kept thinking about Dan Brown as I read this book so if you are a fan of his books I'll think you'll have enjoy this (but please remember to keep your religious sentiments aside).

Orphan Surfacing by Nathan Day defies a genre definition and is equal to any epic fantasy, sci fi or thriller series. Summarizing its multi layered plot will not do it justice but I will try my best.

The main premise is that God, known as I Am, is no longer felt by angels or demons though most humans are still hoping their prayers are answered. The demons believe I Am has been killed. The angels can't believe that is possible but why are their powers dwindling and the demons winning?

As with any saga worth praise we meet many characters that we come to care about from the child Solomon being chased by the powerful demon Uzahl to sweet priest Joseph trying to humanly protect his flock. We also meet the powerful mob like boss Manuel Valdez who appears to be a puppet master of unexplainable events and the human army known as SWARM that seems to want all supernatural entities destroyed be they angel or demon.

The writer, Nathan Day, has an uncanny ability to use the exact words to paint a realistic picture of every scene be it an action pack all out war between a human army and weaken angels or a heart wrenching view of a mother trying with all her might to protect her son from pure evil.

Orphan Surfacing is book one of a trilogy and the good news is book two, Orphan Desecration, is out now and hopefully book three will be along soon. I will post my review of book two in a couple of weeks.

This book was riveting, exciting, scary, thrilling, action filled, and quietly thought provoking and I encourage you to support this independent author who should be on all the best seller book lists.

I received a free copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.
