Having invented the ability to travel through time, an engineer searches history on the internet for event in which a large amount of U.S. currency was destroyed. His arrive there just before it happens, "rescue" the money, and then invest it in the past, in a stock he knows will increase in value. Simple passage of time will make him a multi-millionaire.
What brought him to this decision? Who in his life put him on the path toward making this discovery?
Entertaining novella (72 pages) by author Mark Bowles centered around a man who discovered time travel and used his knowledge to transport to an earlier time to "rescue" money from a bank just before said bank was to catch fire destroying all of the money. He invests in the earlier time and ends up with enough money to do whatever he wanted to do while traveling though time. Although that doesn't make him sound like an upstanding guy, he is a likeable character who develops an unexpected long term relationship with a woman that crosses the barriers of time. "Perhaps in time, we shall meet again."
As anyone who has read a time travel story or seen a time travel movie knows, the time/space continuum can be difficult to follow. This story is told in flash forward/flash back sections and I had on and off difficulty with it, but it didn't affect my understanding of the story. The author really had to map this out for himself in order to write the story and connect al of the pieces and I was impressed by that. Well conceived short story.
