Oxford Portraits in Science

Thomas Alva Edison: Inventing the Electric Age

Rate this book
Thomas Alva Edison revolutionized daily life as few people before or after him have done. The light bulb, the phonograph, motion pictures--through these and countless other technological marvels Edison left an indelible mark on the modern world. Although he had little formal education, Edison
showed a remarkable talent for practical science as a teenager and was only in his early twenties when he launched his inventing career. In 1876, he established the world's first industrial research laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, and within six years he and his assistants had developed a
light-and-power system that amazed the world. For more than half a century, Edison remained active and involved in science and invention. Upon Edison's death in 1931, President Herbert Hoover asked the nation to dim its lights in tribute to the inventor.

I really enjoyed this book about Thomas Edison. One connection I have to this book is a text-to-self connection because I did Thomas Edison for my Wax Museum project in 5th grade. This writing was very effective for explaining about Thomas Edison and what he did. The writing was also powerful about telling about his stuggles in inventing. One strength of the book is that the writing was very good. One weakness about the book is that it gets boring with all of details later on in the book. I would only recommend this to a classmate if they want to learn about Thomas Edison or they have to read a biography. This book is not in any book series because it is a biography.

I think the book was very interesting and it taught a little bit about the technologies back then. TAE's life was extraordinary and if you read this book, you'll find more details about his personal life as well as his inventions. I highly recommend this book to anyone, wether an adult or kid, who is interested in tech like this.
