This rating is for the edition retold by Helen Boswell-Smith and illustrated by Margaret Power. I removed one star as it annoyed me that not only was the folktale source not noted, but more irritating, the selkie character was lazily changed in this version to a mermaid.

Read this once in Year Two pretty good for a reading group book!


2020: Trying to find a copy of it, I still love it. I read an article about its origins but am yet to have an Irish person tell me the legend. Beautiful illustrations and bittersweet ending
