In my eyes Roche is one of the premiere critics working across contemporary Irish drama today. Ambition, range, depth, and skill are effortlessly woven together as he works to vaunt lesser-spoken of playwrights into the light previously occupied by the world famous: Samuel Beckett rubs shoulders again with Brendan Behan, while Brian Friel makes room for Thomas Kilroy and a group of female Northern Irish dramatists. His last chapter, focusing on Sebastian Barry, Conor McPherson, Marina Carr and Martin McDonagh doesn't replicate the harsh dismissals of Victor Merriman, but cleanly and clearly shows the strengths and challenges of these new playwrights. An introduction to be read and reread.
