American novelist and short-story writer. He was founding Editor of the Mississippi Review and Editor of Cimarron Review. He taught at a number of colleges and universities, including Oklahoma State.
Richly detailed and beautiful writing expressing (many years after the fact) a son's life changing encounter with the father he previously had barely known; a man deeply flawed and thoroughly unlikable but a man who nevertheless, imparts to his nine year old son some profound lessons about the issues of adulthood in mid-20th Century America. A truly excellent book!
