This was a delightful, easy going read. My husband & both knew Matt and his wife and frequented his used book store faithfully. He was just an average Joe who walked across America to promote Kiwanis. Job well done.
2016 entry: This is a re-read. It is a great book, moving quickly. Perfect for the let down after Christmas. Snuggle up in a comfy chair with a fuzzy blanket, a cup of tea, a cat/dog and indulge. I may do this every year. It's actually the 3rd or 4th time I've read it!
A decent account of a pretty adventurous trek for a 60 year old. As a cyclist I find it disgusting to see how people have such little regard and toss so much litter out of vehicles. Although I was glad the author brought that up at the end of the book I’m calling bogus on his counts of 20 different types of litter he counted on his walk. There is no way he could have kept track of all these items and still been able to see anything else and maintain a 3 plus mph pace. You can’t tell me he counted exactly 249,842 bottle caps, 156,800 insects, 52,158 beer cans, 73,739 food wrappers, and so on for 20 different items. How did he have time for anything else while he was recording and keeping track of all this?
My grandfather wrote this book about his walk across the US the year I was born. It's a great book for so many reasons. I guarantee you will be inspired by his words.
