The jungle was lovely. The trees and vining flora had awoken. Their verdant new growth stretching upward to fill in the canopy. Luscious blooms in every shade imaginable seemed to unfurl before her very eyes. It was the season of rebirth, her favorite time of year on Braccio, and yet Cygne felt out of pace with all of nature. She didn’t begrudge nature for her beauty. Cygne just wished it had cast a fraction of its bounty her way. But some things weren’t meant to be, no matter how much you wished for them.
Cygne knew life had more to offer, so she left her lush valley to find it, rather than burden her flock any longer. That’s when she found them, the five vibrant males who looked like her. All her life Cygne thought she was damaged, deformed, only to discover she wasn’t Braccio at all. For a brief moment she knew what it felt like to be normal, only to have it snatched away again, when she realized that even among her own kind she was drab and lifeless.
Yet the winged males insisted she was beautiful. Cygne didn’t know if it was a cruel joke, and she couldn’t figure out what the handsome broodmates wanted with her, as she became wrapped up in their foreign world. But it was so nice to be wanted, even if it was all a pretty dream.
Follow Cygne in this retelling of The Ugly Duckling, as her broodmates ruffle her feathers with heated kisses and tender touches, coaxing her into believing not just how beautiful she is, but that true beauty lies within.
Writing is my hobby. As a child, I had a hard time learning to read, so anything I took an interest in was deemed acceptable. I have always enjoyed fairy tales, the older unsanitized versions, as well as the modern ones, mythology, science fiction, action and romance. As I read, my mind wanders, spinning its own tales. So, I figured I’d share my ramblings with you. The books I write contain little snippets from my life. I leave it to you to decide which scenes are fact, fiction, or a bit of both. I am far braver and bolder than is likely sensible, so my heroines are just as gutsy. I'd probably be categorized as an adrenalin junky. My life has been an adventure. I've done archaeology in the hot sun, am well versed with power tools, took Tae Kwon Do in college, have ridden on a Harley with a dark stranger, but never met an alien, vampire or shifter, that I know of. My stories are tawdry, feature a heroine who is gifted in some way, and will always end happily ever after. It is my opinion this is meant to be entertainment, and a depressing ending is not entertainment. Real life offers enough depressing crap. However, I have been called dark. My apologies for my horrific grammar. It is something I struggle with. It is probably connected to the slow reading thing. Believe me people have tried. I truly hope that my fairy tales make up for it.
Wonder full retelling and very imaginative world and species Stephanie West has created here! Set on some distant planet where the natives are colourful bird like creatures with feathers for skin a plume for hair Cygne is the ugly duckling with white feathers and smooth skin.
After running away and cast out from society she eventually finds 5 other males the same species as her. They imprint on her hearing her singing and take her back to their homeworld. The only problem is Cygne must compete against selected other females to become their Broodmate in a competition for their hand.
It was a good standalone tale and the group smutt was
Raised to be with one female for each Brood they is no fighting over Cygne, its all "sharing is caring"
The author put alot of effort in the world building, in fact one of my criticisms would be she nearly put too much effort into it. There was a lot of info dumping and names of various species on the first planet and it was just not needed in a short standalone novel where the MC ended up leaving it anyway! This info dumping did fade out once we got to the home planet and the trials started so just forget all the names you read in the first half! All the names were very complicated being an Alien race I did get why they can't all be called "David" or "Mary" which would be easier to remember but again we're info dumped with the names of every minor character and it does get confusing.
Those things didn't overshadow the book as a whole though and it really was a solid quick standalone smutty read!
P.S. If I could remove one word from the English language it would be the "C" word! No not that C-word C.u.n.n.y *shiver* I hate reading it!
This is book 9 in a series of 10 by ten different authors. The focus is on reverse harems ( if the sub title didn’t give it away ) warning:this book contains very adult themes.
Cygne has been told she is ugly, that she is deformed..with no hard mandible beak and pale white feathers. She has been told she has no prospects and no chance of any future. she has never fit in with her family or on her world. She is alone.
Resigned to the fact that she is ugly and is impacting negatively on her family she flees. After further rejection at a slave auction, she finds herself disguised and singing in a brothel. Her voice has pulled a impresses crowd...in which are five males.. who although brightly coloured like everyone else ....but unlike everyone else, they look just like her!!
This is a ‘re telling’ of the ugly duckling...But with added action, adventure and a big old dollop of chemistry and addition love interest. 😍😍
I adored this book it was a fantastic fast paced read, with a brilliantly original concept that left me wanting more! I’ve read and adored this authors books for a long time and adore that her heroines all face hardship in their lives and despite this, rise above the adversity that plagued them and strive to better themselves and others. No matter the cost to themselves.
I enjoyed how the author ensured that none of the ‘broodmates’ were left out from Cygnes attention and ensured they each had their own personality...and I also enjoyed how Cygne developed and flourished with their affection and attention. This book is so so much more than just a RH story, it’s a book about self acceptance and realising your own self worth. Which is a beautiful, worthwhile message to put out in to a world where the majority is focused on what on our outsides rather than inside. Bravo!!
This book took me by surprise. It's a bit wild, crazy and out there but it made for a really interesting read. The heroine Cygne thinks she's alone in the world and ugly. Everyone has commented on her looks for her whole life and somehow she has managed to survive in spite of her circumstances. Of course all this changes after men looking just like her spot her performing at a tavern. Almost immediately the story took off from there as the heroine started her love affair with her 4 (or 5 sorry I can't remember lol) men. Things are rushed and I do wish they spent more time communicating before jumping right into sex and other forms of intimacy. The story had it's moments when I wanted to throttle the heroine for doing something stupid or not communicating when she should have. Overall I did enjoy the book. I was completely taken by surprise when they traveled to other planets, I really am still confused over this sci-fi element but other than that it was a quick and unique RH (standalone) retelling.
i loved this story hence the 4 stars. but once again i have come across an author who uses the dreaded *vom* cunny lmfao. seriously its supergross and hilarious like ive been reading a book where a gross undead dude refers to it as clinkum clankum or something anyway its the only thing as horrendous and more horrendous than cunny blergh. thankfully the lovliness of the book overshadow the cringy c word and i was able to enjoy the thoughtfulness and the overall message and the kick ass stuff and it was great i especially lived the quotes at the beginning of each chapter im a bit of a quote whore haha. i wish there was an epilogue with a baby or pregnancy or something but hey i still lives it and it wouldve been nice to have some idea of what happened to her parents and to see her go back to barrica? or whatever and show them her home as gallina with guards and maybe know what happened to the other slave chick who had hatchlings to get back too and to also thank her adoptive mother for raising her and letting her see she wasnt deformed and also wouldve been nice for her tormentors and sister bitch to have it rubbed in her face. maybe im a lil vindictive lol. the fact that we didnt get to see vicello and calesse get justice and for her mates reaction when they found out about the cutting off clothes incident forgive me im terrible with names but yeah or like anita? i feel like we didnt see her enough at the end and what about that homeless dude i felt like there was no point in putting him there like whats the story? or the kitchen dude seemed nice i know its a lot but i hate when things arent wrapped in a bow or characters are just inserted and not part of the story and just left to wonder what happened to them after etc. idk i loved the world so much i want to see more of it and more of cygne and the rest. hopefilly if there is any follow ups the c word will be replaced with literally anything else. except crinkum crankum hahaha. good god.
Ruffled Feathers is a reverse harem retailing the ugly duckling by Hans Christian Andersen. I rated it 3.5-stars because I had to read parts of the story twice or three times to understand what Stephanie West wanted today. The world-building and the adaption of the fairy tale are done very well. The story had moments when I wanted to throttle the heroine for doing something stupid or not communicating when she should have. I can't say I especially liked the heroine, but I didn't dislike her. She had her strengths, but it took a lot of pushing to get her there. It was a bit frustrating because her strengths were notable, but her insecurities often got the best of her and made her seem so much weaker than she was. Even though you can read Ruffled Feathers is a stand-alone, it is part of a series. I will look for the other companion books of the series and read them.
This was a really good retelling of the Ugly Duckling. It was a good story and I mostly liked the characters. I didn't care for the way that no one told anyone anything. It could have saved a lot of misunderstandings without actually hurting the story. It was almost to the point of weird, the lack of communication. I'm not sure how she fell for the guys because they never actually talked to her about anything until the end. The sex scenes were hot until the end one left three of the guys and the reader hanging. Not sure what that was about! Despite these issues, there was a really good story here. The ugly duckling that finds her home, her family and herself. We had evil bad people and contests and general mayhem to go with the romance. It as well worth reading.
The reason I decided to read this book was because it was part of the Once Upon a Harem series. I started it, really liked the first few stories, and decided to carry on with them. I wasn’t sure what io expect from this book. I’d never read this author before. The Ugly Duckling concept seemed a bit loose to me, but I wanted to give it a go. I was not disappointed. Honestly, this was a brilliant book. If you’re looking for a girl gets saved kind of story, it’s a great standalone. The world building in this was awesome, and I really liked Cygne as a character. After everything she’s been through, she’s got a backbone of steel, and who doesn’t like a pull-up-your-bootstraps female protagonist? There wasn’t a whole lot I found wrong with this book, certainly not enough to take away any stars for it.
I am an ARC reader for this book. It is a wonderful retelling (with an adult twist)of the ugly duckling who discovers she is beautiful and desirable. The story winds its way from her difficult beginnings , her escape to flee what she doesn't understand to the revalation of who, in reality, she truly is based on her birth. The reverse harem is delightful and becomes central to the entire story. Her men are wonderful, playful and uninhibited. They bring the heroine into a full erotic awareness of herself and the joys of having multiple lovers bent on wringing her senses to the edge of delirium with erotic joys. This is a HEA story that elevates the heroine to her rightful status and surrounds her with stunning, gorgeous males and gives the reader a fast paced exciting story.
This was probably one of the most creative fairy tale retellings that I’ve read. I wasn’t expecting anything like this from the story of the Ugly Duckling. Even though it’s technically a fairytale which I’d usually put under Fantasy I think I’d categorize this one more as fantasy/alien romance because even though there is no Earth or Humans there is 1)space travel and 2) characters from different planets that all have distinct and different physical features and come from different planets. It has some of the characteristics of regency fantasy that you’d expect in a fairytale story as well. I think the concept was well drafted and it’s well developed for a quick standalone romance. This is definitely a fast burn 18+ book with high steam so readers be aware of that.
A Pen-tacular tale! I loved this delightful story. Though Cygne has a rough beginning, treated with disgust and derision for her differences, she comes through it with strengths and skills few females have. It is a thrill to see her gain confidence in herself as five male Olor dance attendance on her. Foul play doesn’t deter her, even when her confidence falters. When the opposition cobbles together a nefarious plan to win unfairly, Cygne uses her intelligence and hard won skills to keep them from their goals. It’s wonderful to see a young woman come into her own and find the love she has longed for with her lusty lovers. I recommend it!
I really liked what this book was trying to do. I'm always a sucker for ugly duckling stories, and this one was more inventive than most. It didn't quite work, though.
The heroes never actually explain anything to the heroine, and she overhears several conversations and jumps to the worst conclusions. The first couple of times that happened, I shrugged, but around time number three my sympathy for her tendency to wander off in a huff was just... not there anymore.
Also, this has the RH problem where I have no idea which of the guys is which. Cygne, the heroine, was lovely and fairly well-developed, but I'm never going to remember the men in her stable after I digest this book.
I absolutely loved this take on "The Ugly Duckling"! I'm not really a huge sci-fi lover (I hate not being able to pronounce those crazy-a** names and places and species, even in my head), but this was pretty good one. Mainly because the story itself was well thought out and well written. The characters were engaging and definitely evoked an emotional response. Loved the "almost" ending (Gallona's battle) and the real ending too. I'll definitely be looking into more of Stephanie West's books.
Overall, I enjoyed this story. The guys were very nurturing towards the heroine and made it a point to convince her how beautiful she was.
I can't say I especially liked the heroine, but I didn't dislike her. She had her strengths, but it took a lot of pushing to get her there. It was a bit frustrating because her strengths were notable, but her insecurities often got the best of her and made her seem so much weaker than she was.
Another great story has been added to this collection! I loved this retelling of the Ugly duckling. The MC was amazing! Despite growing up being degraded she still had a strength within herself. And on top of the great lesson this story teaches there are sexy times to read about too! Truly a captivating story that I highly recommend in addition to the other stories in this series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this unique and sexy retelling of The Ugly Duckling. It was a page turner, and I read it in one sitting (albeit staying up until the wee hours of the next day).
The story has a strong, likable MC, a unique world set up, and multiple extremely hot (and detailed) RH sex scenes. I’m apparently on a RH kick right now.
This is my first time reading this author; I am definitely checking out her other works.
I enjoyed this twist on the Ugly Duckling. Cigne is a sweet soul who knows the value of a person is more than the outside package but gets caught up in what others think but then is reminded of her own worth and is able to stand up for herself and those she loves. This makes it a beautiful story.
I really enjoyed this book. As someone who went through an ugly ducking phase in middle school I felt for the H and the unfair treatment. I loved her men and it was very heartwarming to see them pull her out of her shell. Wish it was longer so it didn’t end so quickly.
I was an ARC reader for this book. I could not put it down! I was up till 2 am so I could see what happened next. The journey Cygne goes on has wonderful twists and turns and made me fall in love with her.
I love this retailing of the ugly duckling like reading about Cygne and her mates great chemistry between the main characters the story plot flowed well and kept my attention. No spoilers here check out this awesome book. I voluntarily review this book for my honest opinion.
I enjoyed reading this book, the 5th in the once upon a harem series. I loved the characters and the worlds they lived in. This was an interesting spin on a classic favorite.
This book was really good. The Ugly Duckling alien style. Cygne has led a difficult life being the "ugly duckling", however she has come out stronger on the other side. She is far kinder than anyone who is bullied should be.
This book was really fast paced. It got going really quickly and could get confusing at times as the world building was kinda vague in places. The story otherwise was brilliant and the characters so lovable.
The story is wonderful and complex. The relationship is realistic and a great slow build . Would have liked more personality for the harem so the reader knows them better as individuals.
It was just horrible. The plot made no sense and things went from 0 to 60 suddenly. Introduced too many characters at once which added to the confusion, even the smut scenes were weirdly placed in the story and allowed for none of the usual development of plot to string between.
That was an absolutely beautiful book!! Amazing story and heroine!!!! Loved her strength not just physically but mentally and her personality was amazing and inspiring!!
