‘A way for you to quickly pick up the financial education that you probably didn’t get in school.’

West Virginia native author Kathy G. Mills now lives in Zambia! She earned degrees in literature, accounting and education and successfully combines those credentials to provide us with a financial education most of us are lacking. As she states, ‘her battle cry is to Demystify! Her mission is to take complicated financial topics, boil them down to the essentials, and then present the information in bite-sized lessons that make learning effortless and fun.’ Though MARKET MOJO is her debut in book publishing, Kathy is the author of the website wallstreetiswaiting.com. THAT is an invitation!

Today’s world is so financially oriented – and becoming more so with the addition of IT, making all the business dealings around the globe instantly mutable. Where do we go to find the basics of that special language and information to understand the marketplace – and even become an investor? This book is as solid a starting point as any on the market. By the end of this instructive guide Kathy informs us we will understand essential market vocabulary, understand that risk is an inherent part of investing, understand the role that diversification plays in our portfolio, and understand the importance of determining a personal investment plan.

How does Kathy accomplish this? With down to earth facts, strong references, helpful illustrations, and most of all a fine sense of humor that keeps us sane. As she explains the title (and purpose) of this book, ‘“Market Mojo” is more than just a snappy title; it’s a quality that is quite real and extremely valuable to a potential investor. A precise definition of “mojo” is hard to pin down, but it generally suggests a special ability that allows its users to act with conviction and confidence. Furthermore, mojo is unique. While many people may have it, no two people will exhibit it in the same way. When you use mojo, you know what your goal is, you know what to do to achieve that goal, and you expect nothing less than complete success. Mojo empowers you to take active steps to realize your vision for the future, which is why you should apply these principles to your finances as well. With a little focused study, you should be able to evaluate different investing options, weigh their merits, and create an individualized investing plan that reflects your needs and your goals. That is what Market Mojo is all about. Although learning about investing is a process, it doesn’t have to be a long, boring, or complicated one. Forget about the stodgy textbooks and the overly complex articles you’ve read while trying to get a handle on the stock market. This book will build your knowledge incrementally by presenting engaging lessons, comprehensive vocabulary lists, and periodic quizzes in an informal narrative style that make the topic approachable and fun. That’s right. I said fun.‘

So we are directed through explanations of ‘the market’, indices, stocks, and personal portfolio. She spends time with important vocabulary, the risks and benefits of the market, and brings it al together in a warm and accessible fashion. This is one excellent guide to understanding finance!

I like that the author doesn't assume that the audience already has a decent understanding of the stock market. This is a "beginner's guide" that is actually a beginner's guide: No stock market "insider" lingo that isn't defined in plain English and everything is laid out in understandable language. The author doesn't try to create a neat, one-size-fits-all package where she assumes that every single member of the audience wants nothing more than a comfortable retirement out of their investments. You decide what your goals are and how much risk you feel comfortable taking on. Maybe you're one of those people who buy Bitcoin or you prefer to sink your money into gold, silver and government bonds; it's all good as long as you aren't investing based on emotion, regardless of whether that emotion is panic (common with price dips) or "fear of missing out" (common with unexpected price surges). While this won't give the reader any hidden secrets to striking it rich on the stock market, it will give you a good primer of how the stock market works.

Market Mojo is all about acquainting the reader into the world of stock market. While, I don't guarantee that the book made me an expert on this subject, what I could certainly say is that it had broadened my horizon and my awareness about the stock market. Like many people I had rough inkling about the stock market and left most of the things related to it to my financial advisor. However, the book has helped in polishing up my idea so that I could look at the shares and stock prices with intelligence and knowledge. Now even though I may continue to invest through my financial advisor, but, I would do so with intelligence and with a lot of questions. The author Kathy G Mills assumes that her readers are novice in this field and she starts from the very beginning. Yet, the book is short and concise and full of personal anecdotes so that it actually feels interesting to go through what normally would be a boring topic.

This book by Kathy Mills is the ultimate guide for beginner’s to learn more about the mysterious and often daunting stock market. Unlike similar books, Mills takes the reader on a well-told and humorous journey to learn about the stock market in an interesting way, not just scribbling down things with intense vocabulary that many don’t understand. You’ll learn what an IPO is, what the Dow actually means and does, and how risk works. Better yet, Mills includes tips for personal investing and vocabulary and quizzes to help broaden your knowledge. It also includes pictures as visual guides to help you better understand certain terms and ideas.
At 213 pages, it might take a little while for some to read, but the writing style will make the pages fly by. If you’re interested in learning more about the stock market and finance, this is definitely a book you should consider reading.

As a thirty-something-year-old, I am seriously looking into investing opportunities at this point in my life. I hear the word "investing" and my brain goes into overdrive and I feel completely overwhelmed, due mostly to my lack of understanding. Market Mojo is amazing. Kathy really breaks it down and I was pleasantly surprised by the humor injected throughout the book. It kept my attention, I learned a LOT, and was an upbeat, wonderfully written book. Kathy's advice is offered in a way that doesn't condescend or intimidate. I actually feel I have a good understanding and am ready to start securing my future. I highly recommend for those beginners who are interested in investing and stock markets.
