Wisdom Comes Dancing: Selected Writings on Dance, Spirituality, and the Body

Rate this book
In this exposition of The Sacred Dance , Miss Ruth s deep insights come alive in movement, the body, and in visions of physical expression in sacred time and form which transform our lives and the world we share. Her beautifully evocative poetry, inspiring journal writings, and thoughts on the divine dance of life are interwoven with classic photo portraits of her great dances embodying Ishtar, Kwan Yin, Mother Mary (& many other archetypes) with simple joy and complex spirituality. She lived an interpretive life and shares with us the avenues of our own passage. Denis s book holds the reader in an inspired state. Beautifully illustrated.

I love what I know of the author and the subject and her philosophy of art and spirit. The book just didn't keep my attention. wish all this on her spiritual views could be combined with the other bio I read [can't remember name]. I have done the Tara dances where dancers embody the goddess, a concept that shaped her career.

The writing style is dated, but her life and her views on dance are unique. The poetry is pretty rough going.

Wonderful collection of essays by Ruth St. Denis, founder of modern American dance, co-founder of Dances of Universal Peace and founder of at least one church of metaphysical dance.
