These fascinating sermons will give you an understanding of the mindset and justifications for the American Revolution from the point of view of the rebelling colonists. There are some shocking finds in this collection which should give us pause concerning the political arguments of today. Take for instance, Philip Payson's remarks, “The exorbitant wealth of individuals has a most baneful influence on public virtue, and therefore should be carefully guarded against.” (338) A must read for any student of American history.
