This guide covers unheralded South Carolina attractions and festivals, including the antebellum Hampton Plantation, the plastic cast of King Kong and model plane collection at the Flight Deck restaurant, and the Springfield Frog Jump.
For a South Carolinian 5 stars. I read this travel book cover to cover. It is elevated by being written by William Price Fox, one of our iconic authors.. My favorite account was when Mr Fox was golfing in the Myrtle Beach area with a friend from the West. His friend didn't think there were real alligators on the course and bonked a huge gator with his club. The gator hissed and the friend ran for his life! Since the book was revised in 2001, the prices are off but that's not the authors fault . I'm reminded of many places I know and many new ones. Great for future day trips as well as armchair travels.
As a resident, I found the authors a bit too enthusiastic about places that aren't really deserving of high acclaim (chain restaurants, for instance). But it's an enjoyable, light read, and the sidebars on cultural events are very worthwhile.
