Not much to say about it really. Just a straight forward biography. Not very long at 230 pages but it gets all the main information across and has plenty of detail. Decently written and fairly positive about Gordon himself.
Richard Garrett gives us a respectful but not reverential portrait of Major General Charles "Chinese" Gordon a soldier of the Victorian era mistrusted by his own government, underused by his own superiors but valued by foreign governments and loved by those that he took responsibility for. A Royal Engineer he was a master tactician and a wise administrator sadly abandoned by his own government in his final hour of peril.
