About the author

Leena Althekair

Born and raised in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Leena’s passion for writing bloomed when she was nine and had only grown stronger as the years wore on. She strives to create a positive impact on her surroundings and to leave a positive mark on the world, as evident by her speech at the National Cultural Forum in 2017, and her debut novel, Foreshadow, which earned her the title of “Youngest English-Language Saudi Author” and first place in Effat University’s “Culture and Science Fair Competition” in 2018.

In a world where an empty page is a blank canvas and her words are the brush, she finds inspiration and passion in penning a story for herself and someone else to find comfort in. Presently, she writes short stories in-between her hectic university life and has more unfinished novel drafts than she cares to admit.

If she isn’t knee-deep in character development, she’s most likely practicing one of her ever-changing hobbies.

Given the author's age, this is impressive, especially the dialogues. It made me think of Neda Denchovska's Той and some of Lights amidst Shadows' novels. If English isn't Leena's first language, Foreshadow becomes even more impressive.

I might finish it some day when my mood for middle-grade/young teen stories is stronger.

Foreshadow: Trapped in Her Own Mind by Leena Althekair is a book about a high school freshman, who becomes the victim of a miscalculation in a rather unorthodox lab experiment. With some assistance from her best friend, brother, and parents, Meghan begins a harrowing journey into her mind as she tries to make sense of what’s happened to her and what might happen in the very near future.

I gave a tremendous amount of thought to the rating of this book. How can I compare a fourteen-year-old author to the adults who make up the vast majority of Amazon reviews? It was a difficult decision, but I placed the author in the same category as other authors with a heavy dose of “middle-grade” mentality in reviewing the story as a peer. I rate this as a 4.5 Star!

This book is a delightful journey touching on the intricate interactions between teens, friends, parents, and those in authority in this coming-of-age story. The author has delivered a sensitive portrayal of the average teen which highlights the love, compassion, friendship, and courage it takes for our children to make it through the challenges they face every day. It is an engrossing story to entertain teenagers who may be dealing with difficult issues like bullying at school. Toss in the class diva, a rather dour teacher, and the love of her pet and Meghan’s journey will touch every reader’s heart with both joy and tears.

The insecurities of the teen years will make you cheer for the unlikely teens who are part of Meghan’s journey. This is a fast and very enjoyable read. I am so proud of the young author for following her dreams and making her project a reality everyone can enjoy.

With hopes that my humble opinion and review would tell you how honestly I wrote this. It is an amazing novel that has incorporated many important things we all have experienced one way or another in our lives. This fear of stares, of harsh opinions or simply the new beginning of something that is completely uncharted. I could relate greatly while reading. Such a beautiful way of writing that obviously indicates, even to those who do not read that much, that this author shows a great deal of potential. I have no doubt that once she started on this road she will keep going on thrilling us with beautiful creations along the way. One more thing, I loved how everything started normally in the story then shifted to some interesting series of events relating that point which changed everything.

Ok, somethings to note before you read this review-one, I read this book almost a year ago now, so I'm a bit fuzzy on the details and I'm not a huge fan of SciFi in general, so keep that in mind when reading this.

The positives; the characters were interesting and I think this writer has a knack for writing well devolved, believable relationships that didn't fall into the "fight every time they lock eyes but totally still love each other" category nor the "agree on everything, never fight and unconditionally support each other" category which are both almost equally as frustrating. Interactions between the siblings was a real a highlight of the book and I wish more time had been spent with them just hanging out. I could see this book as a really good exploration of the relationship between two siblings when faced with a life changing event such as this. But I get that's not where the author wanted to go with this story and I completely understand that. The premise of the book sounded interesting enough. I mean, how would we change our behavior change if we knew what was going to happen in the future. Would it be better or worse? Would we be able to change the future, or is it always set in stone? It's definitely intriguing to me and I appreciate the fact that the protagonist didn't just wake up, realise she had superpowers now and freak out for 2.5 seconds before being completely chill with it.

Now, the negatives; honestly, there's nothing in particular I can point to here. The book was just... bland. There's nothing new or particularly exciting about it and if it hadn't been such a short book I don't know if I wouldn't have just DNFed it. I just wasn't that invested in any of the characters and due to the story being majorly character driven I just didn't feel that need to continue further.

But if anyone's a fan of SciFi-YA blend and a Wattpad-esque writing style that go for it. I do admit that the sequel bait on the end did work on me and I will read a sequel if it come out. If i could do that this book would be a 3.5 stars but oh well.

This book gave me nostalgic feelings. I can imagine this being a comfort show that I would watch as a young child (and adult now) after a long tiring day. It made me feel like i was watching a Disney high school drama, but with less exaggerated teenager tropes, and more healthy friendships, lol.

I definitely recommend giving this book a read, if you think you're having a difficult time with growing up, and miss the feeling of being younger- spending time with your friends and teachers.

This review is WAYYY overdue 😭😭
I read this book almost a decade ago (yes I read the beta version mwahahaha I’m special.), and I still remember every detail. Am I biased? Maybe 😛 but in all honesty this book WAS amazing. This book is targeted towards a young her audience and to nine year old me, this was a GREAT READ.

Perfect for early teens/ late kids who want to get into reading. Great themes & lessons, character development and emotional intelligence, that all help shape a tween. Best part was the no “clean dating” trope, that authors like to sneak in for some reason??

I remember my sister reading me the first draft every day on our way to school until the story got way too interesting for me to wait 24 hours between each reading session. I grabbed the manuscript and started independently reading the rest of the book, which was about 60%!! For a nine year old whose first novel was this, I felt pretty proud :)

Ps. Safe to say this is the FIRST ever piece of fiction I consumed that made me SOB. As a kid I was even less prone to tears than I am now, and this damn book made me sob 😭?!! Absolute masterpiece. Now I’m not scaring you and saying the book is sad… (spoilers ahead?) it just makes you THINK it’s sad but then it’s not… am I making sense?? Idk. But yeah 10/10 book.
