very good bio on Booker's early days as a struggling boy post slavery trying to make it. this book dates from the 1970's, but gives a good view of tbe joblessness hunger. etc. facing black people after the Emancipation Proclamation set them free into a nation that hated/ignored them. i see where he got his opinions from now.
