The Dobie Paradox

Rate this book
Eccentric mathematics professor John Dobie and his rather more practical girlfriend, Dr. Kate Coyle, are braving an Atlantic gale to visit a patient in a local clinic when they find a comatose young girl lying by the roadside. Despite their best efforts, seventeen-year-old Beverly Sutro dies that evening.
Was she the victim of a random hit-and-run on the lonely windswept hillside or did someone have altogether more deliberate plans for her death? To the irritation of the Cardiff police, Dobie - in his own inimitable way - begins to investigate. With Professor Dobie assisting the police with their inquiries, anything can happen - and generally does.
Initially, Dobie's wayward attentions are focused on the local clinic, where brilliant young author Adrian Seymour is undergoing treatment for drug addiction. But the trail leads ever outward until it points, alarmingly, to the chief of a powerful crime syndicate currently behind bars. Luckily Kate is on hand to help with matters forensic, for Dobie has stumbled on a vital clue....

Dobie has an appointment at a drug rehab center, where someone from his past is trying to contact him again, when he and his ladyfriend, Dr. Kate, find the body of what seems like a hit-and-run victim. But the pathologist says that it's not an auto accident--it's murder. There's a lot more from the local police detective, known as Jacko, whose mother must have been a Miss Malaprop. He likes Dobie, but doesn't understand him at all. Dobie gets more involved in the investigation than Kate cares for, especially when he ends up held at gunpoint by a murderer.

A story of humanity and the fight for justice. Some people ignore the facts that are staring them in the face, and others investigate them to find the truth. John Dobie can't let questions go unanswered when his patient sadly dies, so he begins his own investigation. Naturally, John Dobie is met with many challenges as he investigates the case as a civilian, but that just adds interest to the story. I really enjoyed this book, its witty, charismatic, and gripping.
