Les Chasseurs de la Préhistoire

Rate this book

this is a really marvelous and readable book (yes, i can say words like "marvelous," its 2025. move on) filled with cool tidbits and seems pretty comprehensive about the paleolithic, although im not an expert. Kind of absurd to think about reconstructing all of this information from merely a few objects, and I love the feeling of "Deep time" when people are doing stuff like that. It's sort of a book thats filled with boyish fun... very boyish topics like hutning and flint making.. and so some of it did seem a little juvenile and straightforwards, and i'd have liked more philosophizing and speculating. but even the asides were very thought provoking. At one point he mentions that the prehistoric woman whose jaw he’s writing about had (probably) the brain the size of a 3-year old child of our era, and how striking that is… it surprised me to hear that because I know a lot of adults who have toddler brains

Fascinating look at life in prehistoric times.

I was particularly interested in the section on toolmaking.

It is amazing how much information can be obtained from half a jawbone.
