I've been a writer since the age of nine, around the same time I became a compulsive reader. Some ideas appear in the shape of prose, others as plays, musicals, screenplays, songs or even blog posts. But most of the time I'm just trying to write something I'd like to read or see.
This book is about Allegra who is scared of trying new things. She's ready for breakfast in the morning and very hungry! She wants oatmeal or waffles, but her dad made something she has never had instead. BLUE PANCAKES! She thinks to herself the things she likes that are blue like her daycare and her overalls and thinks about giving it a chance. Her piano teacher and her mother have helped her get over things that were hard at first. As her brother begs for her blue pancakes at the table, she contemplates eating them because she has to give it to him if she doesn't eat it. She decides to be brave and try it! She ends up liking them and wants more blue food. The story ends with her having polka dot food for lunch and she says "No way, I'm not trying polka dot food... Would you?".
I think this opens up a good discussion for little kids to talk about things they're scared of trying and how they got over it if they did. Also, they could brainstorm other things like polka dot food they'd be unsure of trying or would love to try! For a fun class activity, you could make blue pancakes as a class by adding blue food dye or bring them ready made to try as a class. It would encourage getting over fears and accepting new things as they come.
