Cara and Grace are two young women. Cara is a medical doctor who has an exciting career, a loving marriage and a beautiful six-month-old son, Noah. Grace is a teenage girl – young, fit and talented, embarking on all that life has to offer her. When each one of them is devastated by personal tragedy, neither one knows how to rebuild their own life. But when Grace has the idea, inspired by the Reach For A Dream Foundation, to cycle across South Africa from Durban back to her home city of Cape Town, Cara appears to be the most qualified companion for her. ‘Miles to Go’ is a story about the journey that these companions take – a journey of many physical miles but also one that is filled with just as many emotional milestones as they embark on their journey back to wholeness. It is filled with the struggles and fears, tears and more than a little laughter of two young women who are trying to overcome their loss and find their way back to life, in defiance of the hands that they have been dealt.
I was born and raised in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and from earliest childhood had a great love of reading and also of writing my own stories. I also enjoyed the dramatic arts and qualified with a diploma in Speech and Drama in 1976. I attended the University of the Witwatersrand where I studied Medicine and qualified as a medical doctor in 1984. Since then I have practiced medicine in urban and rural settings and currently have my own practice in Somerset West. Through the years I have continued writing, mainly scripts for musical productions for schools and youth groups. My husband, Roy, is also a doctor and I have three adult children, two sons and a daughter. As my children have grown and left home, I have had more time to indulge my passion for writing. My first novel, 'The Reluctant Cuckoo', was published in 2016 and my second, 'Miles to Go', in 2018
Once again author, Cathy Donald wows us with her second novel. Both female main characters go through traumatic life changing experiences and deal with their problems in different ways. Fate intervenes and they meet deciding to cycle from Durban to Cape Town, each doing it for a different reason. Cathy captures the raw emotion of loss as well as how one deals with it. As a South African the author describes places that we all know and love, weaving the story from Durban , through the Karoo and along the Garden Route to Cape Town. As a medical doctor she is able to inject her real life medical knowledge into the plot so that the story remains true. A MUST READ for all. I absolutely loved this book.
Life can be cruel! Fate brings Cara and Grace together as they cycle across South Africa. Miles to go is a heart-wrenching story and I found myself totally engrossed with the characters who filled the pages. The age gap of the two main characters show us we can lean on each other, especially when we are facing harsh challenges. There are many lessons for us to learn. I was left with an empty feeling that I wouldn’t easily connect with another book for a while after reading this informative, inspiring and beautifully written book. Donald has a gift to bring her characters into our feelings and our lives. I was keen to read this book when I saw that Cathy Donald had written another book. I was not disappointed!
An absolutely wonderful read with very strong and inspiring female characters. After reading “The Reluctant Cukoo”, I was pretty keen to read this next book. I loved it! Sometimes life sends you more than you feel you can handle. In times of great adversity, people react differently. Some people need to take a stoic approach to protect themselves and may deal with death and extreme situations by burying themselves in work or clamming up. Some people really need to share their sorrow and gain support from their loved ones. Death is a very unique and often isolating experience. When two young women find themselves isolated by their own tragedies they are able to use this experience to help each other and to use the challenge to raise themselves from a very dark place.
When I started reading this book I didn't think it was going to be as good as her first novel, The Reluctant Cuckoo. However, I have just finished reading this and I have been blown away by the way that the author brings the issues which everyone thinks about but few are brave enough to talk about - let alone put into words. It is written with compassion, strength, empathy and encouragement, all at the same time. This book is going to help so many people. Keep writing. The world needs your wisdom.
Once again I was taken on a journey of familiar places - the bravery of the two main characters was uplifting and inspirational. I was left pondering and re-visiting various aspects of this book for many weeks after having finished reading it. My personal circumstances have changed dramatically since reading this book and I feel as if it may be a good one for me to reread in the near future. I hope there will be more from Cathy.
Miles to go... a fantastic book with a deep sole. Easy to read but hard to put down. I loved the way the author describes so many places, I have been fortunate to see in South Africa. I could realy feel what the characters where going through: the happiness, the pain, the sorrows ,the joy..... It touched my sole I can not wait for the next book
Another wonderful read by this author. Definitely worth a read. There is a deep empathy for women and their problems, be it marital problems or a teenager and her family struggling with a dreaded sickness. It was easy to identify with the main characters and to join them on their spiritual and physical journey. Well worth a read.
I enjoyed Cathy's first book The Reluctant Cuckoo because of her accurate portrayal of her characters and the wonderful journey she took us on around familiar places in South Africa. Miles To Go was just as enjoyable for the same reasons as well as being a good story, well written due to Cathy's solid understanding of the issues she writes about.
Beautifully written and so well researched. I could just picture the cycle trip they took through South Africa. The characters are so true to life you feel you are reading a true story! Well done Cathy on your second novel. Avid readers of good books are in for a real treat if they have not already discovered you as an author. I look forward to your next book.
