When Shirley arrives at the Institute, she thinks she will be studying Politics. But the Institute has a sterner purpose, the study of Witchcraft. Gradually, Shirley is introduced to the practice and history of the Craft. She has a talent for mind control and for romance, and is given her witch's name, Light o'Love.
She is shown the sights of Liverpool by the brilliant, austere Rostov and taken back to his den. He is one of her lecturers. The others are more friendly and cherish her and her growing powers. She surprises them all by breaking two of the Dark Light's "toys" – automata sent to monitor the Institute. Shirley is the center of attention from witches and from the Dark Light.
Through her efforts, Rostov is revealed as a spy and he is driven into exile. He can only win back his masters' approval by presenting them with the cause of their sacrificing Light o'Love herself.
Romantic Adventure Fantasy Witchcraft 100,000 words
Jacqueline lives in the far north of Queensland, Australia, on the shores of the Coral Sea. She has a house built for the tropical climate - on tall stilts and with walls that open to let the breeze blow through.
She lives with her husband who is easily managed, and her marmalade cat Rudy who definitely isn't.
Jacqueline writes romantic stories because she is an unrepentant romantic at heart. But she also loves travelling to interesting places and meeting new people, and they find a place in her stories too.
When she is not writing, she is kept busy by her garden which is still maturing. Right now her coconut trees look young and scrappy, but come back in five years and they will be towering over the house.
And what could be more romantic than a coconut palm?
Initially, I was attracted by the interesting setting of the The Jane Flockman Institute of Political Science and Ethics, and the haunts in an around Liverpool. What I found was a memorable story about the supernatural world thriving around us.
Jacqueline's elegant prose teases readers with sensual descriptions of characters who come from all over the spectrum and each and every one are part of the Institute's eclectic family. While the story focuses on the coming of age and sexual awakening of, Shirley Grainger, Light o'Love, the work features loving and amusing older characters who are the heroine's teachers and friends. It's rare to come across a work of erotic literature with mature couples but Jacqueline created such attractive and vibrant pairs I found them to be just as delightful as the young lovers!
Light begins as a pupil but she evolves into a guide for her classmates who are also studying The Craft and testing the waters of the adult world. The young women soon realize the dangers of witchcraft which come from attracting members of the Dark Light.
The heroine, with all her erotic adventures and looming perils around her and the school still has a degree of innocence derived from her altruism. Light's "voice" impressed me as being completely believable and she is such a fun character I hope a sequel is in the works. Light's very goal is to reach out to heal people around her with love and in doing so she touched me as a reader and brought a smile to my face.
I had a great deal of fun writing about Light o'Love and the great events that entangled her.
If you have read any of my stuff, you probably realise how I obssess about getting the places, people and events to be real and believable (even for fantasises!), and Liverpool University in 1968 must have been a fun time and place. Especially if you love getting out of town and into the hills at week-end - as I did (but later).
Girls mature rapidly when they first leave home and go to Uni, but I did not consciously make this a coming-of-age story. Great events entangle Light, and she has to grow or be swamped. She turns into a pretty tough cookie by the end of the story - I like her!
Definitely five stars - although I may be a touch biased.
Shirley, like all young women, takes off to go to an institute of higher learning to further her education. This institution is no ordinary institution though. It was created for the study of witchcraft. She is tested and given her specialties, which are cognodynamics and love...

Set in Liverpool the story follows erotic adventure of college life in the 60's. Light begins studying as a pupil and follows her talent studying The Craft. She soon becomes a woman in command of her powers who saves herself and the Institute from the evil Professor Rostov. A very delightful tale with a unique take on witches and their craft. I really enjoy fantasy stories about super powers and Jacqueline made it even more enjoyable creating a world of erotica and magic.
