Excerpt from "Know Thyself" In Greek and Latin A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Literature in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy

It is with sincere gratitude. That I here acknowledge my indebted ness to Professor Paul Shorey of the University of Chicago for the subject of this investigation, and for many an illuminating sug gestion during the progress of the work.

Full of the best quotations, I return to this classic again and again.

This little book is a gold mine of quotations. It is fascinating to see the different emphasis that Plato, Aristotle, Stoics, Philo, NeoPlatonists, and early Church Fathers on the same concept.
