First let me say how much I love quote books, so naturally I was going to love this one by our prophet, Spencer W. Kimball. Knowing he was raised and lived in Arizona makes him special to me also. I have heard many of these quotes over and over again in talks, magazines, and elsewhere. Some are so familiar that I could quote them verbatim. As I read these quotes which are arranged alphabetically by topic, I could hear President Kimball's signature gravely voice that he acquired after his vocal chord surgery. It is a voice I came to love. It was sweet to listen, maybe listen a little harder to catch it clearer, thus making us take in his message a little deeper. I love his thoughts and straightforward style in teaching us true principles. Here are a few of my very favorites:
On keeping the Sabbath day holy:
"It is unthinkable that one
who loves the Lord
with all his heart
and with all his soul
and who with a broken heart and contrite spirit recognizes the limitless gifts which the Lord had given him
would fail to spend
one day in seven
in gratitude and thankfulness,
and carrying forward the good works of the Lord.
The observance of the Sabbath is an indication
of the measure of our love
for our Heavenly Father."
On Scripture reading:
“I find that when I get casual in my relationships with divinity
and when it seems that no divine ear is listening and no divine voice is speaking, that I am far, far away.
If I immerse myself
in the scriptures
the distance narrows
and the spirituality returns.
I find myself loving more intensely those whom I must love with all my heart and mind and strength, and loving them more,
I find it easier to abide their counsel.”
On Sacrifice:
Sacrifice brings forth the blessings of heaven.
On faith:
Security is not born of inexhaustible wealth but unquenchable faith. And generally that kind of faith is born and nurtured in the home and in childhood.
