This is a beautiful book about elephants (surprise!) sent to me by my friend Linda A. on Goodreads. I have always been interested in elephants and in the natural world so it was a great thrill to receive this and learn more about the African elephant. This includes Kunkel's first-hand report on what he experienced. The first part is a narrative about the habits, activities and, unfortunately, the endangerment of these beautiful, intelligent animals. I was surprised to discover they used tools for things such as back scratching, forked limbs as headrests when tired and sticks as toys. The sad part is there is less and less room for these huge elephants in most parts of Africa. Normally, their only predator is man who has decimated herds in killing the animals for their ivory. Elephants are also overpopulating some of the sanctuaries designed particularly to keep them safe.
The second part of the book is a stunning series of color photographs of elephants in the wild and the third is the same set of photographs in black and white with captions to fit both the narrative and color pictures. This is a well thought out presentation examining both the uplifting and frightening parts of the elephant's plight in today's Africa.
