Another author I'd never heard of before discovering them on the open library, Maxim Jakubowski is a long-time crime fiction and erotic fiction author and editor. Seriously--check out the guy's bio. It's super impressive, and includes a long-running gig with the Guardian as their "crime" reviewer.

If there is one thing the 90s produced in excellent volume, it was the "erotic thriller"--where then-trendy neo-noir tropes are infused with increasingly porny levels of sexuality (think Basic Instinct, Body of Evidence, Color of Night, Jade, the list goes on). Jakubowski seems to have taken one look at this cinematic landscape and said, here, hold my beer--I can do you one better in print. This book begins as a conventional neo-noir, with recognizable genre elements. Joe (or Jack? does it matter?) is an accountant to a shady mob-connected pornographer who makes the mistake of becoming erotically obsessed with the other man's wife. Cue the torrid love affair, the plot to make him go away, and the escalating levels of violence as the plan goes into effect. What makes the book immediately different, however, is the sheer explict nature of the sex scenes. I mean we are talking a level of description I have never seen in print, with a lot of acts you probably are only familiar with from hardcore internet porn. Sheesh!

Once the lovers "solve" their problem and go on the run, the book slowly transforms into a more straightforward work of erotica about one man's sexual obsession, and how his possessiveness drives away his ever more curious partner. There's some seriously kinky scenes in a Paris sex club, before she leaves his ass and the final part of the book is about him being an increasingly uncool stalker. Intercut is our b-plot, a pretty ridiculous storyline about a stripper recruited as the ultimate assassin who, you guessed it, just has to seduce her marks first.

I love a quick and nasty work of crime fiction, and I really dug the first part of this book. The sex angle was a new addition to what I'm used to, and Jakubowski is a skilled deployer of all the usual tricks and twists. As a matter of personal preference, however, I lost a little bit of interest when the lovers escaped without any consequences and the book turned into a more straightforward work of erotica (I don't mind a good deal of sex in my books, but for some reason books that are mostly about the sex itself don't do much for me). I have to admit, however, the book is mostly well-written, even if it does have the occasional typo or stylistic groaner. Jakubowski is an efficient writer with a pervy mind, so if that's your thing you will love this book.

Good story well told. Not for the faint of heart. Maxim Jakubowski manages to weave two stories and a number of genres together very effectively. It is part noir, part erotica, and part part suspense novel. Because She Thought She Loved Me takes the reader all over the world and through all types of situations and emotions. A solid read.
