The Male Homosexual in Literature: A Bibliography

Rate this book
Ian Young’s bibliography has served as a basic guide to English-language works of fiction, drama, poetry and autobiography concerned with male homosexuality or having male homosexual characters. Entries include titles published through 1980. Works of primary importance (those in which homosexuality is a major aspect or which are otherwise of particular relevance) are marked with an asterisk for the convenience of researchers and collectors. Works are identified by author, title, place of publication, publisher, and date. For easy reference, entries are numbered and a title index is provided at the end of the main text. Five highly-acclaimed essays on gay literature by lan Young, Graham Jackson and Dr. Rictor Norton, including essay on gay publishing, round out the listings. A title index of gay anthologies completes the work.

Uniquely acclaimed upon initial publication in 1982:

“An essential reference for any student of gay literature” – Gay News (London)

“An indispensable adjunct to any collection of literature or subjects which draw upon literature” – Readers Quarterly

“Ian Young’s 1982 The Male Homosexual in A Bibliography is an outstanding work of careful research and dedication.” – Michael Bronski in Pulp Friction

Outstanding republication of Ian Young's 1982, The Male Homosexual in Literature: A Bibliography. Both the original bibliography and the 2020 supplement chronicle publications through 1981 (pre-AIDS). This is a classic reference book. Both volumes are available now via ReQueered Tales on Amazon. Perfect as a gift for that book lover of early gay and bisexual male literature. Find the new Bibliographical Supplement on Amazon. Thanks ReQueered Tales.

This is a jewel of a book. Ok the copy I have is 40 years old and a lot happened since, but the geek in me, the librarian in me and the bibliophile in me has made this book one of my most precious books.

There is something so fundamentally wonderful about having a listing of author after author, after book listed, all with Gay content.

There is nothing to tell you what these books are about. If they are good or bad, but the author attempts to use symbols to show if they are predominantly Gay or just have some Gay content.

It is over 40 years old, though it has been reprinted just recently, but I love this and thank the author for the the labor this must have taken to produce. Thank you Ian.
