"Holy war" - a term coined in early modernity of the 16. cent. based on modern assumptions of Old Testament theology. R. Schmitt outlines the history of this idea within OT scholarship starting with J. Wellhausen's conceptualization of "holy war" as a starting point of ancient Israelite nation building in late 19. century until post-9/11 implications on the relation war and religion in theology (chapter 1). Close reading studies on Biblical verses and sections dealing with war within Deuteronomistic (chapter 2), Priestly (chapter 3), and other parts of the Old Testament (chapter 4) constitute the main part. A supplementary chapter (5) reflects on the use and abuse of assumed OT conceptions of war during medieval Crusades, the Reformation and German Peasants' War as well as during the First World War (chapter 5).
