After Bobby Byington's unforgettable winning high-school season, Coach Robison recruits Choctaw players from several communities to play in a summer league. Coach selects the Panther as the team's mascot, saying, "To many Choctaws, young and old, the Panther is an elder watching over us, helping us when we are in need."

As the team gels and moves to the national tournament, they find out they are up against more than other basketball teams. They must deal with racist taunts and unfair sportsmanship on the court. The situation comes to a head when, on the eve of a key game against a bullying opponent, two Choctaw players are arrested for robbery.

Never doubting their innocence, Coach Robison asks, "Who can we trust, and how can we find the truth?"

It was overall a great book but I feel like some parts were missing possible detail and more interesting thoughts.

Oh I loved the ending of this book! The last line and the title connection are so powerful! Plus I was not at all ready for the twist! Such a page turner and just a good story. The writing isn’t spectacular but the messages are profound. On to the next one—the last one in the series.

4th in a series of Hi/Lo books about a basketball playing Choctaw teen by celebrated Choctaw storyteller Tim Tingle.

One of the best hi/lo series I've ever read, with a ton of basketball action, plus drama, family issues, romance, bullying, racism and a strong moral about the power of friendship.

Book 4 in the series - although stands alone fine as I had not read the others and had not trouble understanding plot or characters.

Bobby is part of the Choctaw Nation. He's a very good basketball player and is excited to try out for the all-Indian team that is being formed to compete in a national tournament. Bobby and several of his friends make the team; they make new friends as well. However, they face more than just the challenges of basketball when a serious racial incident and a crime occur.

Author is a member of the Choctaw Nation. Authentic context. Great hi-lo read, engaging storyline, lots of sports action as well.
