Steven, Roy, and Eliza return in the most shocking tale of The River series! Eliza thought she was doing a favor for a friend. Instead, it turned out to be a twenty-year nightmare. Forced to aid a madwoman intent upon bringing a new evil into the world, Eliza seeks help from Steven, Roy, and Terrell – but they’re completely unprepared for the horror facing them. Attacked by those they are trying to help, they soon become trapped in the dark, mysterious passageways of a labyrinth, where a monstrous evil is gestating, waiting to be birthed. Evocation is a fast-paced novel of ghosts and monstrosities and the fourteenth entry in the popular River series!

EVOCATION is Book 14 in Michael Richan's River Series. This book features the father and son duo of Roy and Steven, along with their friends, Eliza, and Terrel. Although this is Book Fourteen in the main River series, I think that reading the last Roy/Steven book (THE HAUNTING OF JOHANSEN HOUSE), along with the first two books in the Eliza spinoff, would be sufficient for readers to be able to enjoy and get a deeper understanding of the characters in this novel.
The atmosphere in EVOCATION is some of the best that I've seen in any of Richan's novels--certainly one of the most "complex" set-ups, and intricate threats that we've ever been introduced to in the River Universe. A creature known as a Culsu, adept at using great Labyrinths as a way of concealment, has a past with Eliza. Unfortunately, this past has grown stronger as the years went on, and even Eliza may not be able to handle it alone.
"Very nice enigmatic description . . . Tone, very vivid. Details that inform us what the hell is going on, not so much."
Calling in on an old friend and mentor of Eliza's, Aceveda, may give them some help in understanding the nature of the threat; however, things may be too much at this stage even for their growing crew.
The relationships between the characters is stronger than ever in this installment, and new light is shed on some previously "unknown" issues. Roy remains as sarcastic and bull-headed as ever, while Steven tries to remain the "voice of reason", in a situation that none of them seem to have any control over.
". . . That's the most delightfully sarcastic critique I've heard in a long time! . . ."
This may just be my favorite River novel to date. It's rich in character development, poignant emotions, a new, violently unstable threat, and some of the best River scenery that Richan has brought to us yet.
Well Steven, Roy and Eliza got themselves in a tight spot...again. We come into the newest River book with Roy, Steven and Terrell cataloging the different levels of the atolla in the Johansen house. Mysteriously Eliza asks to use the atolla to get to New Mexico. They agree and since she insists upon not have Roy or Steven come along, they send Terrell. Not long after Eliza and Terrell leave, Steven gets a frantic phone call from Terrell. Using the atolla Steven and Roy rush to N.M. Then the "fit hits the shan" as they say. Fast pace, engaging story, with some new characters and many twists.
I pre-ordered this book, but I guess it never uploaded because I bought it about 10:30pm last night and just finished it! I couldn't put it down. It was action and thrill packed with intensity and explosive writing! Awesome!
I love this series and this novel fits right in the story flow. The characters are always well fleshed out (by now Roy feels like my dad) and the plot and storyline are always tight enough to keep me reading through the night. Thank you for the new addition.
