Awesome spiritual guidance

This book is amazing. It puts the secrets of the spiritual life and growing in holiness in terms that make it easy to grasp. Watch out for a few times he makes it sound like salvation comes from our efforts - it doesn't, it's a free gift, and yet, I think Br Anthony would convince and motivate anyone to strive with all their heart to love God and others, to do his will, to get to heaven and bring everyone with him. There are many moments when you get a shiver reading words that seem to show a premonition of his own death, 40 days after publishing this 40 chapter book ... Or could it be that a holy person should just always have in mind that he is going to die someday, and it may be someday soon, and we've got to live for that moment anyway? I think he's on to something. Br Anthony, Pray for us!

I found this book a bit disappointing. There was no real depth to it and hardly any real spiritual insights. If anything this book is definitely milk and not solid food, but it wasn't even very much milk. Reading it felt equivalent to drinking milk by the teaspoon. Each of the entries was short and said very little. He did have some material on how to work on getting rid of your vices that seemed helpful, but other than that, I did not feel like I gained any insight from it.

This book could also have used an editor. There were various mistakes throughout, the most memorable being a reference to something "stumping" your growth rather than "stunting" it.

I really wanted to like this book. Anthony Freeman seemed like a great guy and it is sad that he died so suddenly before he had a chance to become a priest. I do hope that this book is more helpful to others than it was to me, and its author has been in my prayers. I wish him the best and I wish that he'd had more time to accomplish his dreams which were obviously many. Rest in Peace, Anthony Freeman.

This book is accessible and approachable in ways that theological topics sometimes are not. There is passion in these pages and the voice of the author shines through as someone who sincerely wants readers to connect and find joy in their spirituality. It is evident that Br. Anthony Freeman loves the Catholic faith and wants to share that love. The book is also not patronizing or fraught with a heavy-handed approach that leaves readers feeling that their faith is being dolled out in "shoulds" and "should nots". Freeman's writing is conversational and therefore approachable by all Catholics, at whatever stage they may be in their lives and faith formation.

The only criticism I can offer is that the book is marketed to Millennial Catholics, and I admit I picked it up hoping to crack what types of spirituality appeal to this group. I was hard-pressed to find much that is specific to today's 20 - and - 30 year olds; the advice and points could extend to anyone on a journey to draw closer to God and the Catholic faith. It's reach is much broader than the book implies, which is fabulous in terms of its broad applicability but slightly disappointing for a reader who wanted a golden nugget or two designed to speak especially to the Millennial generation.

I first found out about this book when I learned of Fr. Anthony Freeman's surprise death. He had been on retreat for 8 days then served Mass with Pope Francis on Easter Sunday, 2018 then died the morning after from an unknown heart condition. This sad (for us, probably not for him) story spurred me to order his book. I read this book in a couple hours just to review it before giving it to my sons. I found it could be very helpful. I can tell that he has done much reading of the major saints like St. John of the Cross, Theresa of Avila. I am currently reading "The Fulfillment of all Desire" by Ralph Martin (again) which is much more intense but I found One Step closer to have many of the same concepts in a much easier quick mode of explanation which is probably better suited for busy millennials. I think it's a great book and wish the author wasn't taken from us so soon.

I truly loved this book.
I found out about it after the passing of our beloved author. It was shocking to me to read about such a young and inspiring person to leave this world so I decided to read some of his advice.
It turned out that it is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read, as the title says it motivates you, I want to be a better Catholic, hacks because through them you can develop yourself, and those experiences that he shares with you definitely motivates you.
At the end of the day, you find yourself willing to do something with your life, trying to achieve God's plan.
I'm so grateful for this book and I'm sure brother Anthony is sharing God's presence, may he rest in peace.

Great Advice

Brother Anthony has left us a blueprint on being one step closer to who God has made us to be. Excellent advice and practical tip on how to live Christian life well and to carry our cross and follow Jesus one step at a time. With our Lady’s help and following the path of Jesus, we should not be discouraged in our faith journey. You will forever be missed Brother, thank you for your Yes.

I had the privilege of teaching this author for two years when he was a minor seminarian. He was an extraordinary young man who is deeply missed by all who knew him. He really put into practice everything he mentions in his book. This book is a lasting testimony to his joy-filled faith and Christian optimism. I highly recommend this book! If you would like to read more about life at the minor seminary where he went to school as a youth, I would also recommend my book "The Apostolic School That Wasn't...".

Though I'm far from being a millenial, this book is wonderful. Even non-Catholics will find it very helpful. It is full of fantastic steps to bring us closer to God's plan for us, in our own lives, and to bring us closer to a life of holiness, no matter our vocation in life.

It is so sad that such a bright light in the Church is now gone, but after reading this, I know Br. Anthony found the purpose God had for him in this life, and he lived it to the fullest. Thy Kingdom Come!

I can't wait to read the whole. It is light to start, and kicks in good reflections and self-examination. Way to go.
