In this novel, a comedy of manners is seen through the eyes of William, a lonely young man on the loose in the late 1960s. William's conviction that he is a comic genius leads him to a psychiatrist's consulting room, and the book's title takes on a deeper meaning.
Not really for me. I found it odd that a story told from first person POV revealed so little of that character. I found the lengthy cafe section tedious: this person came in, sat there, ate this, said that, left... Yes... and? Maybe I missed the point, but there was virtually no advancement of plot and no revelation of character throughout. If I was asked what happened in the book, it would be pretty difficult to say. I enjoyed some of the witty descriptions of place, though.
