Crossing the Astoria bridge for the last time, Curtis felt conflicted as he watched his home state of Oregon fade away in the distance. He was leaving the hopelessness of his current life behind, but he now faced the uncertainty of living along the coastal waters of Grays Harbor, where the prospect of a better life was likely just as grim.
Over the past several weeks, most of his friends and neighbors had either died or disappeared - and judging from the rumors around town and the limited amount of information he'd seen in the news, it seemed to be happening everywhere. He was hoping that the quiet, picturesque community of Cohasset Beach would shield his family from the chaos and misery in the world around them - but even in a secluded cabin, hidden by the ancient forests of the Pacific Northwest, his family begins to notice strange things happening around them. They soon discover that the nightmare they've been hiding from, isn't nearly as terrifying as what awaits them in the nearby town of Westport.
I wanted to like the book, but found the characters “stupid”. They repeat the same things that didn’t work, over and over. They have no clue about how to hide or secure any building they occupy. In the end, 3 stars.
This beautifully written book is worth every penny of my money! The story line draws you in to a series of disasters of the world ending in a acute way .We the people ignore everything around us like always and get caught with our finger up our ear .The author did a wonderful job of at the choices the main characters made and the world built around them .5 stars the story was beautifully written and the situations and the pace was non stop !!
I really wanted to love this book. The description of the coast is accurate however the characters were not well-developed and I found I had a hard time connecting with any. At the end of the book I really felt it was forgettable.
That prologue! There were just as many moments that sucked me in, as moments that dragged on.
As a Grays Harbor local, my favorite character was the list of locations. Frankly, I felt a greater connection with them than the people. I’m sure that’s the point, though.
I’ve never read a zombie horror novel before, but I used to watch TWD. It was a great show, but it bothered me that I couldn’t get too attached to people. Maybe I wasn’t meant to connect with the people in this book. It would be too sad, otherwise. Although, I was more irritated by their fates than saddened.
Reviews for Book 2 seem a little higher. I’m looking forward to knowing why.
For the love of the English language please get a good editor. Breathe - verb - to take air into lungs and expel it Breath - noun - the air taken into and expelled from the lungs
Quick read, suspenseful, could have been much better, but I found myself tripping over bad sentence composition and misuse of words among other things. Also - much of the story takes place on dark and stormy nights but somehow there's still moonlight shining on the water?
I did appreciate the setting, being a native of western WA.
I found this tale extremely gripping. First, the author was able to connect to some basic fears many of us are experiencing right now during a pandemic: fear of infection, fear of people and getting too close. In addition, although it is an apocalypse, and you expect danger and excitement, without giving too much away, what an Amazing choice for a Villain! Good characters and great action Want to read the next!
this was a great book, sufficiently creepy, more than most and I've read a lot of this genre. The Z word is never mentioned, and it keeps you guessing. Hoping for a book 2 very soon, with that ending I NEED to know what is gonna happen next for our survivors!
Wow. This disturbing apocalyptic story had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I didn’t want to keep reading at times but couldn’t put the book down and finished it in one setting. I was instantly hooked and emerged into this story. So good I need a palette cleanser before going to bed tonight.
Kept me reading late into the night. I know, cliche, but it did. And haunted me during the day. Can’t wait to read the next books. Not predictable. Really real, eerie and frightening. I keep thinking, this really COULD happen, and in our lifetimes! And what would I do? How could I survive? Maybe this ends up being my Survival Handbook...
The only “post apocalyptic” I have read, and the approach is graphic and hard to take, but the characters are well developed, the intertwining plots very interesting and once I started I couldn’t quit. If you can handle the graphic descriptions and horror of a future you wouldn’t want to live in, give this one a chance.
This was a new genre for me! It first attracted my attention because it takes place in Washington. I really enjoyed it. I thought it was well written. Page turner for sure! Looking forward to reading book 2 and 3.
Single dimension characters that are without any personality whatsoever and completely indistinguishable from each other wander around doing one ridiculously stupid thing after another. The Kindle version was only a couple of dollars, but at that, a complete waste of money.
Overall I enjoyed reading about these places in which I grew up and knew well. The characters were not bad but a little hard to feel connected to them. It's a short book and a fast read. Looking forward to learning more about the characters and build a stronger connection to them.
Particularly gripping mystery that had all the descriptions of home. As someone also growing up in Washington and frequenting the coast (as well as Astoria), it was like reading a very visual TV show script.
This is not my favorite type of book. Zombies are not my thing. However, with that being said, it was a great book. The author did a wonderful job of pulling the reader into the story. It was easy to read and captivating, I couldn't put it down.
Couldn't stop reading. It has been a long time since I've read a book in one day. I have told many of my friends and family to read this book. On to the next!
Not really my type of book, but I love reading books set in places I know well. And, it kept my attention all the way through - which means I'll read the other two in the series!
went in blind and didn’t realize i was getting into a walking dead situation 😅 i enjoyed it and really loved that it’s talking about places and cities im familiar with.
100% loving this series! Grew up in every single one of these places! I no longer live in WA but my heart will always belong to Grayland, WA and the beach! Can’t wait to finish the series!
I enjoyed this book. As another reviewer noted, there are some inconsistencies for those of us who have lived in the area but this is fiction after all. I am hoping to have some insights into what actually has happened to the rest of the world and that remains a mystery, leaving me ready to tackle book 2!
