Before it ends, Harry has fallen hard for Valerie and doesn't take kindly to it when Massey kidnaps her for one of his wives. No, not kindly at all. Harry can bring a lot of pain when he gets in a bad mood. If he has to put together a small army of his own and lead them to a mountaintop redoubt in northern Idaho to get Valerie back and settle the score, the degree of difficulty makes it all the sweeter. Harry Pines is the enormously entertaining creation of Terry Holland, who arrives here walking in the footsteps of Hammett, Chandler, Spillane, MacDonald, and Parker.

With a nod to Sam Spade etc., Harry Pines, a lucky ex-con, is hired by the beauteous Valerie to find her missing nephew. Sometimes too derivative, sometimes just eyerollingly unbelievable, I nearly quit this book a couple times. Then Mr Holland would write a wonderful scene that got me hooked again. Probably more of a 2.5 than a solid 3, honestly I think this would work better on the screen than the page.

An excellent first book. Has all the makings of a great series. The rim airily takes place in Hawaii, with some action in Idaho, and some time spent in Chicago and Louisville.
Harry is an Ex-con living in Hawaii who is asked to help find an AWOL soldier. The involves, gambling, arms dealing, and fanatical religion. A real fun story.
