Just as food and hunger crisis in Subsaharan Africa, and more directly the stagnation of livestock production, must be understood in terms of process and not as a single, isolated event, so too must the resolution of this crisis be viewed in terms of process. This book stands as an element in this process and not merely as a single event, adds to its significance. Individually and collectively the contributors to this volume and the editors have furthered our understanding of the nature of the seamless web of political, technical, and structural constraints that have served to create stagnation of livestock production as part of the larger intractable food problem confronting Africa and its people. The book thus merits the careful attention of those individuals, organizations, and governments who are serious in their efforts to implement positive changes in existing livestock production-marketing systems for the purpose of better meeting the food needs of Africans.
