Ben Jonson

Benjamin Jonson was an English Renaissance dramatist, poet and actor. A contemporary of William Shakespeare, he is best known for his satirical plays, particularly Volpone, The Alchemist, and Bartholomew Fair, which are considered his best, and his lyric poems. A man of vast reading and a seemingly insatiable appetite for controversy, Jonson had an unparalleled breadth of influence on Jacobean and Caroline playwrights and poets. A house in Dulwich College is named after him.

Amazing play. Great intro to Jonson. Reminds me in some ways of one of the moot plays of Cornielle, but I'll be damned if I can remember which. Other people reviewed this play poorly on this app. Because they're fuckin idiots. Jonson was right about critics.

No sleep for the tired bones of Plautus. An infinite chain of playwrights parade in and out cribbing and copying: Jonson high-fives Shakespeare, Heywood compares notes with Molière, and somewhere in the back Steven Sondheim hums showtunes.

The Case Is Altered is one of a long line of Plautus-rips, an entertaining one, though perhaps not a vital one.

Jonson's writing is closer to Shakespeare's than most of their contemporaries I've read. He's good, and barring the Bard, he may be my favorite Elizabethan/Jacobean playwright. This play is clever, fun, and brief.
