This book applies stationary time-series theory to many problems that involve statistical detection and communication, such as the digital data processing of radar and seismic signals in the presence of noise, a technique of vital importance in many branches of engineering and other physicalsciences. The author details the principles of wave-propagation, and uses physical models to determine the most effective methods that can be used in digital computer analysis. He includes descriptions of data collection techniques and their applications, for example in depicting subsurfacestructures. The book includes many useful exercises.
Dr. Enders Anthony Robinson was director of the MIT Geophysical Analysis Group and he developed the first digital signal filtering methods to process seismic records used in oil exploration. He then worked in the oil industry both as a geophysicist and as an economist, having received degrees in both field from MIT. In 1988, he was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering for pioneering contributions to digital seismic processing.
