Green takes readers outside to look at a leaf, a frog, and a caterpillar while a brown bear is surrounded by a wooden spoon, a basket, a girl's braid, and a broom. Using a colorful palette of pastels (perhaps oil pastels or chalks) the author/artist takes the young reader on a romp that involves the reader (or book's story) chatting with the colors. Greeting them in a variety of ways. Each color's page is a hodge-podge of words that the young reader can have read aloud to him or her and they can point to the object.

Curiously, to me at least, the words associated with a particular color are not necessarily usually seen in that color. So it is an exercise in word and object recognition at that point. On some pages objects could easily be the color emphasized on that page - crown for gold, sun for yellow, rose for red. Brown is pretty much a "color true" object recognition page, but not so the other pages.

A cute book with a nice approach to learning colors, word and object recognition, and a light cheery read, too.

Introducing toddlers to colors is one of the earliest things we begin to teach our children. Some of those first books that taught colors were favorites of our children and this one would have ranked up at the top. Judith Drews uses the cutest illustrations to feature the first colors and words that kids would be interested in. Her illustrations are soft, crayon drawings and remind me of doodles in a notebook.

I appreciate the author’s use of the obvious items but also unique ones that she chose to highlight the colors, from a red car to a brown eye to a black rain cloud to white briefs (undies). She also includes numbers on the pages in that page’s color. The words under each picture remind me of the Richard Scarry books that were a favorite during my childhood. Kids will begin to learn words and repeat them along with the colors as they start looking through the book on their own. Judith Drews’ enthusiastic drawings and fun spirit will make reading and learning colors fun for parents and kids.

Hello Lilac Good Morning, Yellow: Colors and First Words by Judith Drews. PICTURE BOOK. Prestel, 2018. $15. 97837913373515

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K - OPTIONAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

This book is a translation from German. Each two page spread includes language that sounds like a letter to that particular color and a page with a collection of objects drawn in the corresponding color. There is one big item that the collage centers on.

I liked the pages that sounded like a love letter to that color, but I was confused by the pages on which the letter just stated something obvious. “Good night, Black. You are so dark.” I was also often confused by the collection of items for each color. For example, lilac includes “berry” and “wool”, but also “five” and “musical clef”.

Do you have a favorite color? How do you spell your favorite color?

Author and illustrator Judith Drews introduces young readers to words and objects associated with a particular color. Young readers will find these pages filled with yellow, blue, purple, red, gold and more. This guide is perfect for young readers learning their colors and words. Parents, teachers and caregivers can sit with children and ask questions about what they see, how to find words, ask children to spell words and recognize colors. This book would be great for a classroom read-a-aloud. Kids could also be creative and create their own color page, which makes this read completely interactive.

Nice art work but a bit young for us. Can use to teach colours or to name objects/animals.

Miss 4 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.

each page of this book is a different color, and has a variety of objects that represent that color. nice for toddlers to learn their colors and pick up some new vocabulary, but i have to say, there were some odd choices of objects. namely 'syringe'...
