A successful campaign by the right, coupled with an ignominious and unimaginative retreat by the left, has meant that socialism has taken a heavy political battering over the last two decades.
Interesting book, especially as Hain lays out the outlines of neglected Left traditions (libertarian socialism). Unfortunately, the current affairs portion of the book suffers as it is 26 years old while giving the reader potential areas of exploration. I think that Hain’s career shows that libertarian socialism is compatible within our conception of a democratic framework. If updated and revised, I would rate this as highly as 4*.
