What happens when Mary Henry goes joy-riding with her friends and they are challenged to a drag race by some local punks in a muscle car? A total disaster, that's what! Carnival of Souls (released in 1962, running 78 minutes, and presented in black & white) has become a cult horror classic over the years as fans have admired the eerie and ethereal organ music which underlies an even eerier story about Mary, a woman determined to carry on her earthly existence and obligations despite undergoing a devastating car accident. As she struggles with the inability to cope with modern society and her own desire for solitude, she makes many discoveries about her own self and the world around her and the strange pavilion at the end of town to which she is ineluctably drawn. Wherever Mary goes, people wonder if she is fully human or if she carries an ineradicable piece of the "beyond" with her.
