Poetry is untranslatable. You can convey meaning, but unless you read it in its original language, you won’t be actually accessing the poems world. Many different poetical forms are inherently linked to their languages that they become inseparable. Traditional Japanese Haikus are one example. Another one is that of the Andaloussian Arabic poetry and the muwashshah (موشح). The civilization that took place in Andalusia for 8 centuries, from the 8th to the 15h, left us with truly remarkable monuments in arts, architecture, science, philosophy, music, and of course, poetry. Yes, I do classify poetry as a monument the achievements of many of the Andalusia poets during that period, men and women, Arabs, Tamazights, Muslims, Christians, Jews, and even Spaniards who composed in Arabic are still celebrated to this day. So this book is a collection of some of the finest Andalusia arabophone poets and a celebration of the monuments they left us.
You see, that poetry defied the classical norms in Arabic poetry and focused more on making the language a lot more music and melodious. Heavy and archaic terms were abandoned to focus on simpler terms, more accessible terms, and the really brought out the beauty of the Arabic language. When you read poems by Ibn Al-Khatib or Ibn Zaydun, you will find yourself eventually singing them. The themes range from love poems, to poems about wine, to Sufism, and to an elevation of Andalusia with cities like Cordoba, Granada, and Sevilla to a Paradise that many of these poets ended up losing. But above all, a general theme that bursts out is the love of life, which showed in all the other monuments that we can visit today in South of Spain.
Reading such poetry makes me love the language even more, and it allows me to appreciate even more the power of poetry.
