A family of three tied up, each with a gun to their head, “Where’s the money? Where’s the fucking money?” one of the intruders yelled. A petrified daughter tortured and forced to listen to her parents being shot in cold blood. “I heard shots, like pops,” she told the 911 operator, “somebody's broke into our home, please, I need help!” Was this a home invasion? Or something else, more sinister, a deadly betrayal.
The real-life horror story that happened inside the Pan family home shocked their normally peaceful upscale Toronto neighborhood. The Pans were an example of an immigrant family. Hann and his wife, Bich Pan, fled from Vietnam to Canada after the U.S.-Vietnamese war to find a better life. Their daughter, Jennifer, was an Olympic-caliber figure skater, an award-winning pianist, and a straight A student.
The Pans worked their way up in this rags-to-riches story, now living in a beautiful home with luxury cars in the driveway. Was it these expensive items that lured three intruders with guns into their home on the night of November 8, 2010?

There are several books about this strange case from Canada (a young woman arranges a home invasion aimed at killing her parents). This short eBook gives the basic facts.
Very short read of information that can be found with thorough internet searches. What sets this apart is all of that information is consolidated into one volume. I would have preferred the author had cited his sources.
Interesting story but also very sad as this young Asian girl was pushed so much by her parents that she went over the edge. She lived in a world where she was not allowed any choices or any fun. She was at fault for the murder and attempted murder of her parents, but they are at fault for making her into the damaged girl that she became.
This is a great book! I think it’s hard to have such strict parents but it also doesn’t mean they should be murdered and by their own daughter. I found it fascinating how many times Jennifer changed her story and how the author shows you the differences in her story. It is amazing to read about police work and how they put all the pieces of the puzzle together.
It is absolutely crazy how much this girl lied to everyone. I can resonate with the situation as far as trying everything to please her family, but then, it just got to be too much. Trying to please became the ultimate betrayal and acceptance was the killer. At some point she should’ve just cut ties with them, stop doing what she was doing, or realizing they’d never change. This book definitely goes detail by detail of how it ended up like it did.
A quick and engaging Canadian true crime read that provides a detailed look into how the downward spiral of a young woman led to the destruction of her family. This book exposes the lies and plotting of a daughter raised in a “tiger parenting” environment who rebelled in the worst way possible. Thanks to the author for gifting me with a copy of his book, and an enjoyable evening of reading!
Jen was raised in a strict family. Always pushed to do the best, and if she failed, was punished. This ultimately led to her hiring someone to kill her parents.
Jennifer Pan is the daughter of Hann and Bich Pan who escaped from war-torn Vietnam and settled in Toronto. Their two children were raised according to a tradition called "Tiger-parenting."
The parents set high goals for the children and they were disciplined if they failed to meet those expectations. Jennifer became highly proficient in piano, figure skating and swimming. Meanwhile, she was expected to make straight A's in her school work.
When Jennifer met Daniel Wong, her grades began to suffer and she constructed a complex web of lies and deceit to keep her parents unaware. The stress became so great that she began to believe that her life would be much better without her father in the picture.
What happened next would destroy many lives, including Jennifer's. The story is well-written and well-researched and presented in an organized manner so the reader is not distracted by trivialities. It is highly recommended for all true crime fans and non-fiction readers.
Excellent book! I love the writing style and all of the information about the crimes and the confessions. how much she lied and about everything from her school, job and family.
