This is a biography of the founder of the Iona monastery and community in which the author, having studied ancient documents and reading between the lines, sets out to destroy the accepted mythical image. He investigates the unconventional role of Columba as warrior-priest and king-maker as well as devout Christian, and traces his journeys from Ireland to Iona, Lindisfarne, Canterbury and Wales.
Ian Finlay was Keeper of the Department of Art and Ethnography at the Royal Scottish Museum, Edinburgh, from 1955 to 1961, when he was appointed Director of the museum.
His books include Scotland (1946) and Scottish Gold and Silver Work (1956).
